ntrprnr 0 #1 July 20, 2007 And I'm doing it. It's gonna suck. I'm nowhere NEAR as ready on the bike and swim as I should be. If I drown, my body should float down the Hudson towards Jersey somewhere. If you find it, you can keep my heart rate monitor. And I know I'm nowhere NEAR as hot as Kelly, but for my own sense of self-worth, if I post any photos, could you be so kind as to at least pretend to like them? _______________ "Why'd you track away at 7,000 feet?" ntrprnr 0 #8 July 21, 2007 There 34 waves in the start. I'm in wave 32. It's going to take a freaking YEAR to get in the water. Nothing like sitting around the start area for THREE FREAKING HOURS. The following exchange took place: Me: "So why did you quit?" Him: "Because I like to ski." Me: "Huh???" Him: "Before I started racing I would go to the mountain and ski all day. ntrprnr 0 #10 July 21, 2007 We'll see... I really want to train - It's a question of motivation - which is coming, definitely... Who knows. It's frustrating as hell. I ran a 4 mile race this morning, at an 8:04 pace. Not bad, right? Pretty decent, by most standards. Except that there were 11 members of my team who ran it with me - I finished 10th of 12th of my team. Does that mean I suck? No. But in my twisted, messed up little brain, it means that I'm unbelievably slow - despite the fact that I came in 1255th out of 4038 - That's a really, really decent amount, right? Except that I look at the 10th of 12 and think - "wow, I suck." It's more psychological than anything else. Either way... Your comment about skiing reminds me of a joke... An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked, "How long does it take to catch them?" The Mexican replied: "Only a little while". The American then asked why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish? The Mexican said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs. The American then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?" The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life." The American scoffed, "I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise." The Mexican fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?" To which the American replied, "15-20 years." "But what then?" The American laughed and said that's the best part. "When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions." "Millions.. Then what?" The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos." Sigh._______________ "Why'd you track away at 7,000 feet?" "Even in freefall, I have commitment issues."

ntrprnr 0 #12 July 23, 2007 I did it I did it I did it! AND I did it in under Three Hours!! Woo!! http://triathlons.accenture.com/NewYork/tracking/Map.aspx?bib=3927 For my first Olympic, I'm very happy with my time. I've got to get quicker in the transitions, and fortunately, the Hudson River current was insane - VERY quick. So it was good. I was happy. All is well. I'll tell you, though... I don't know if I'd do this one again. 5,000 people, a three hour wave start, and not starting until over an HOUR after the winner finished? That kind of sucked. I'm thinking that if I do train for a half-ironman, I'd like to do it in a much smaller environment. 500 people, MAX. Was running into the park for the run, and people were walking out with their medals. And it wasn't like they were faster - they'd just started like, two hours ahead of me. Grr... Of course, the one photo today that dad got was me chowing down on some Jelly Belly Sport Beans after getting on the run. Lovely. :) Thanks, y'all, for all the encouragement! Actually, found a second photo - mom, dad, and me, after the race. _______________ "Why'd you track away at 7,000 feet?" "Even in freefall, I have commitment issues." ryoder 1,400 #19 July 23, 2007 Yesterday I received this from my friend Mike, who is an ex-bike-racer: Quote Remember that kid who beat me up a climb in the Basque Country a few years ago, the day after his 14th birthday? Read "Young Aussie brothers leading the way in USA," the last item on the following page: http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=news/2007/jul07/jul22news2 Angus was that kid. Here are the results of yesterday's race from Idaho Springs to the summit of Mt. Evans (27.4 miles with 6920' of climbing): http://www.cyclingnews.com/road.php?id=road/2007/jul07/mtevans07 More info on the race: http://www.bicyclerace.com/about.htm In "American Flyers" (1985), this was the course they rode in the last race, (although it really starts in Idaho Springs, not Golden): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088707/ So Peter, how would you feel about racing your bike to a finish line higher than your usual exit altitude?"There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. JohnnyD 0 #22 July 23, 2007 Go to a bike shop that has a knowledgeable person on tri-bikes. You need to get tri bars and reposition your saddle. It will make a huge difference in longer races.
