Not looking for high performance or spooping. Just want a nice safe canopy to get me home and have a strong flare for a soft landing. Old bones and all. If you double my skydive numbers, you have about how many times I have flown/landed a fabric wing, as I learned to paraglide before skydiving. Jumps 8-50 were on a Spectre loaded 1 to 1 or 1.1 to 1, depending on the rig I used... Never a hard landing, even at higher altitude. (except one crash that was turbulance related and had nothing to do with the canopy other than I was able to save a broken bone by being on a tame wing) The rigs I rented were configed for student use, so the brake lines were longer to prevent stalls. Even without taking a wrap on the lines, it would shut down for me... I did notice I liked the 1.1 to 1 a little better, I could feel a little more power the extra speed gave. Openings were great, and I learned to pack on a Spectre and found it very easy to pack. I now own a Pilot, which I am equally happy with, but it feels a bit more sporty in the air, but I am not one to give a full review (yet) other than to say if a Spectre treated me well on the very beginning of my learning curve, and my instructors gave it a thumbs up too, I think it is a forgiving canopy to fly at lower WL.. I also bought a spetre 190 when I returned to the sport after quite some time away. I'm a bit younger, but also a bit heavier than you. At 210 lbls when I bought it, I had it loaded at about 1.2 and it treated me great and still does! Sometimes I think I might have done even better on a 170. The openings are soft and on-heading, and the landings are extremely smooth... the only time I have trouble is when I forget and flare as if I'm flying an old canopy (strato-star, or cruzair). The spectre is much more responsive and gives me what I ask for (even when it's not what I really want). You can't get a softer opening anywhere, it's like falling over backwards into a feather bed. It just takes a while to open, as it has a notoriously snivelly opening - so bring along a good book... I've made it back from some very long spots, even one when I pulled on the low side (my fault) and I still made it back to the drop zone's property. The flare is terrific, the landings are soft. AND I have seen people swoop the things, escpecially in the smaller sizes. You may not ever want to swoop - I don't either - but it IS possible if you ever change your mind. As a seven cell, the Spectre doesn't have the long flat glide of a 9 cell, but that's a matter of personal taste. The Spectre is deservedly one of the GREAT canopies of all time ! It could turn faster, but the landings are right on the mark. I demoed a 230 first, and that one was definitely a little slow for me. The interesting thing was that I noticed a significant, but less large, difference in performance between the 230 and the 210. Toggle tension and glide speed were both noticably greater. I've also demoed a Silhouette. Suprisingly, the Silhouette has much less flare power than the Spectre. Although it flies much flater. I subsequently demo'd one (170) from PD and was so impressed I bought a 170 new--after having jumped a Stiletto for two years. It's different, but really sweet, just what I want in a parachute. The larger in size the slower the opening has been my experience with the Spectre. Great openings and great landings and a performance envelope that will keep you excited. Make sure you get credible advice from an instructor if you are downsizing or have been away from the sport for any length of time. Enjoy!
