Meeting people in a new city.

Ive never really been one for the whole bar scene which is what I know a lot of people do to meet new people after moving. I recently moved out to Ventura, CA and know pretty much know no one. Anyone have some ideas for a good way to meet people out here?

No interest in schmoozing with the local skydiving riff-raff? :)

Go out to Santa Paula for the first Sunday of each month. There is a great airplane/car show-off at the airport. Great folks and some cool cars and planes. Good restaurant to boot.

Go to the gym. Go running, hiking, sailing, scubadiving...

jon

Oh hell yes... he is right there by Channel Islands Harbor and Santa B.

If you know how to sail... check the clubs and marina's bulletin boards/craigslist.. and volunteer to crew on peoples boats.

i bet bolas is a fun guy, lol.

and i agree with Amazon, DROPZONE.

or what about taking up sports where you have to be in groups, or with at least one other person, rock climbing (indoor or outdoor), paintball(by far my personal fav), or surfing, which isnt really a team sport, but ive met alot of super cool people on the water.

Well the dz is definitely a place to start but Perris and Elsinore are both about 2 hours (or 8 depending on traffic, don't ever try to drive through la at 2 on a Friday thinking you will beat the traffic because sadly you won't) away plus my recent cross country voyage has left me pretty broke and I'm trying to save so I can buy a rig

yeah ive thought about santa barbara but like I said, broke & trying to save for a rig so im *trying* to keep my skydiving and rental fees at a minimum right now

WELL.. you might go on out... hang out at the DZ.... meet people... learn to pack.... make money packing ... You would not be the first skydiver who financed getting started by packing... ESPECIALLY at a DZ that seems to have a "few" tandems passing thru.

If you show an interest in learning.. you might just be surprised... BUT it all depends on the vibe of the place.

You do not know till you try.

You also might try Channel Islands Harbor... .. I spent some time in a boat yard there prepping a boat to sail up the coast. I bought it there and boat owners hire people to sand, paint... might be a way to pick up some money too especially as people haul the boats at the end and beginning of the season.

As others have said, common interest groups. Also, volunteering rocks as a way to meet people (not to mention it's just a good thing to do). When I first moved to Seattle (the first time I'd moved anywhere where I knew almost no one) I volunteered, joined alumni clubs for my college and grad school, and got to know a lot of people that way. I had a rule - for the first year there I wasn't allowed to turn down any social invitations, so even if it meant tagging along to a party where I'd only know one person, or going to an alumni event where I wouldn't know anyone, I'd go because it was a chance to meet people. I also followed up a lot more than I might have otherwise - actually calling people I'd hit it off with to hang out - met some good friends that way, too.

thats not a bad idea, i live literelly right next to channel island harbor, my condo is actually off of harbor blvd

Trust me.. there are a HELL of a lot of boats within a few miles. There is some good money for those who bring them up to "Bristol condition" for owners who do not have the time to take care of their toys;)

I was not impressed with anything that approached any quality surf on the Channel while I was there. Now out by Point Conception.. SHIT:o:o.. I was doing some AWSUM surfing down 25' waves on my 36' sloop
