I believe this business deserved a review from me after the fantastic day I had experienced yesterday. My instructor was very easy to get along with and made me calm (to my surprise) through the whole process. I am saving up to visit again for another jump as we speak. Hinton airfield is a clean, legit and welcoming establishment and the staff and instructors are a credit to it. You may find yourself waiting for some time to do your jump but this should be expected and there is plenty of things to do such as watching other people jump whilst waiting. Would recommend this experience to anyone.

I spent a gloriously sunny July this summer obtaining my A-License.

The centre is fantastic. I had Maddie and Sandy teaching me, both superstars and incredibly professional.

The centre itself is very relaxed with a good mix of fun jumpers, tandems (with friends and families) and students. There is a large outdoor area to sit, relax and watch the jumpers come in to land.

The whole operation is run very smoothly with the highest quality. Management get all the jumpers up in the fairest possible way so its possible (with good weather) to get in 4-5-6 jumps a day.

As a student you have your own facility round the back which is great for coaching and debriefing.

The equipment provided is of the highest quality (although sometimes the jumpsuits did smell!)

This centre taught me how to skydive but more importantly it made me fall in love with it!

Couldn't recommend spending long sunny summer days jumping here

I am about to do my level 6 AFF at hinton where I have done my previous 5. I cant say much about pro's and con's as I clearly have not got enough experience to compare.

What I can say is the AFF school has been excellent, all the examiners/instructors have been cool, calm and knowledgeable. the emphasis on what you need to do before and after the jump is not lost on these guys who must see hundreds of students pass through the doors.

Nice area away from the pro's and tandems where you do your brief/de-brief where there is hanging harnesses for canopy training and pc's for watching your jumps back with critiscim and 'what to do next' tips! (and mega important, several large beanbags!)

i read this website before I booked my aff and hope that if someone is reading this in terms of doing the course themselves I would say then this is a brilliant place to do it.

the centre itself will become my home DZ and not just because of location, the manifest people are always arranging things for the best lifts for everyone! last weekend it was rammed full of tandems but 3 and 4 way teams and solo jumpers were being placed very well on everylift! and us AFF students were on every other lift if not back to back.

Lots of pro jumpers here so the potential for friendly coaching is certain.

This weekend I have been grounded because of the lovely uk weather, my examiner and the lovely reception girl rang me a few times to say how the conditions were. they even called today to say dont bother coming in as it was too windy, amazing customer service!!!

All the services here seem very professional and all the students I have come across have travelled to hinton because of good word of mouth, says it all in my eyes!

Message me if any questions!

I understand that Tandems are a great source of revenue, but to wait nearly 5 hours to get on a load as a solo fun jumper is a bit much, but this is what I experienced at Hinton two weeks ago. I can see why the wind tunnel is so popular at Milton Keynes and Bedford.

This drop zone has always seemed a bit on the quiet side every time Ive visited. Maybe I should give it a try when theres a boogie on. So Ive never stayed the night or done more than two jumps per visit. So I can'nt tell you about vibe of the place.

But I can tell you it has a good shop located here for all your skydiving needs. The riggers go the extra mile to make sure your kit is A1, if you put it in to get serviced. And the aircraft (G92) is so fast altituded that your jumping out the door in no time at all. And its open 7 days a week.

No bunkhouse but free camping and there is a shower too, so you can set up your tent in a really beautiful place:-)
I went to Hinton today as I work temporary in London. First of all, great staff! I've been briefed and checked in no time in a very professional and friendly way. You just feel welcomed right away.
Fast, comfortable 15 jumpers airplane. 13k in about 15 min
Great, huge landing area. You could land blindfolded. Well, not literary but you know what I mean...
Big, carpeted, closed packing area.
Good shop if you need a battery or even something more serious like alti, goggles or helmet.
When I was packing my rig I had a chance to witness some ground AFF training by one of the instructors. Once again, very impressive!
The only con is a “Hamburger bar”... It’s ok to buy a tea or coffee but food is less impressive and they were out of some stuff at 12 o’clock. Including sweets It was cheap though
Overall it is a really great place to jump so see you there soon!

Known for its friendly atmosphere, Hinton is in my view the 'Go To' DZ for visitors to the UK. The PAC750 is warm in winter, comfortable, quick to altitude and efficient. The facilities are perfectly good and the staff are patient, helpful and highly professional. Prices are comparable or even slightly lower than other DZs in their part of the UK.

It was my last weekend in the UK and my regular DZ was closed so I had to choose a go with a new one.

Load organizing: I was a bit apprehensive about this dropzone because of all the reviews on the site. They did have a lot of tandems, but they were a;sp able to put me up in the air 7 times over a weekend with the fussy UK weather (early Sat - 09:00 - till closing time - 18:00 - Sun). I could have gotten a couple more, but I was too lazy to get up on Sunday.

Kit hire: they have regular kits for 10GBP and demo kits for 15 GBP. The demo kits look really new both (rig and chutes). The one con of kit hire is that you have to have the kit ready and packed in order to manifest.

People: really nice and friendly. It is a business, but you could see they also do this out of passion. The social scene is really nice.

Plane: it flies and it has benches.

Facilities: clean and well maintained (same for the general dropzone area). The showers are clean with good water pressure and hot water.

Called few days before coming, and said I need to rent their rig but I never used a PC before, and I will need a brief; they said "no problem".
Woke up on saturday and told them I have an A license and I'm not local and will need a brief, they said "ok you can come".
After coming all the way from london and paying 50 pounds total, they told me there that they're too busy to give me a brief and I can't jump, even if I wait until afternoon.
Great welcoming.
Won't go there again.

I've jumped at Hinton many times, the staff generally have always been helpful and polite,Some days it seems "overun" with Tamdems,So better to go midweek if you can.The jumpship (PAC)is first class, and the landing zone huge.

I'm new to this sport and have not been to many dropzones yet but the welcome I got from Hinton was great. When I first returned from doing my AFF course abroad I went to Netheravon and was shocked by how awkward they where towards a new comer, Hinton however made me feel right at home and run through all my drills then let me get straight up in the air. Great place to be and felt like i was not treated as a newbie.

I've been to Hinton about fours times now, the first was when my girlfriend did her charity tandem. I got three jumps in that day, and enjoyed myself. However, the first descent I did I misjudged the wind and landed just off in the next field. I couldn't spot the gap in the hedgeline and had to pick my way through the bushes. And received a good ribbing for it afterwards! The last time I jumped there, the upper winds really picked up and I did almost the same thing again, so you need to be switched on and aniticipate it so you don't get caught out and muddy! :)

The jump ship is pretty good, a PAC750XL which gets to 12,500 fairly sharpish. This place is really big on tandems but there appears to be a regular bunch of sports jumpers there so get in with them and you shouldn't be stuck with people to jump with. They were certainly friendly when I was there, so make an effort to introduce yourself and you'll be fine. Plus, when the day's done there's an honesty bar for £1.50 a drink, can't say fairer than that!

Rigging is available through Point Zero. They were recommended to me by the guy I bought my rig off and having met Dave Gould who fitted my RSL, I was very happy with the work and his approach. Take your rig for a reserve repack and they'll do a full main, reserve and container inspection for the one price. It's £40 - £50 depending on whether it's the while u wait option. They will also courier a rig to and from for extra cost.

Generally, I like Hinton. It's quite an intimate DZ with a group of regular faces who seem more like relaxed jumpers than hardcore full-on competition monkeys. If you want that, nip down the road for Weston.

I have done several jumps now at hinton and each time i have been there i have been looked after and have felt that i have recieved exceptional instruction, they don't try to force you to jump and even though they are much more experienced than you they don't talk down to you, the food is great, i could live on the bacon sandwiches. You are allowed to camp for free on the site (not that i ever have). The club no longer offers RAPS courses but if you have already started the course you should be ok to jump there. AFF and Tandem courses are still offered.

To sum up i recomend hinton to any skydiver anywhere, its a friendly place to make your jumps.

Any to an earlier comment about flaring to late, don't always rely on the radio to tell you, ur there do it when u think u should (i.e. around 6-10 feet), my radio cut out on my first jump and i relied on my training and made quite a bumpy landing, but walked away.

I recently started my AFF course at Hinton and have to say that its a great spot. There were many more experienced peeps there which made it quite intimidating at first, but the training and the proffesionalism of the staff was superb. I felt the ground training and the briefings were good and the instructors friendly and patient with my lack of knowlage.

At the time, they were down to running a single Cessna aircraft, which struggled with a full lift and took its time to reach drop altitude, not that this was anything more than a small inconvenience as the view is staggering.

My worst gripe was that throughout the first days training i was stuck on site with no access to food, but this was cool as by Day 2 the burger van was open. I would advise anyone who is new to take some munchies along as there can be some waiting between lifts and training.

Theres a great shop with pleanty of Skydiving gear and vids etc on site and the weather was all blue skys.

I've been in Hinton jumping a couple of weeks ago and as a Drop Zone is quite nice, big hangar and packing area, showers and a really cool PAC XL750 plane. It climbs quite quickly to 13500.
The only thing I'm a bit concern is about how they treat students some of the so called 'experienced guys'. Some of them made students to feel a bit stupid for being a newbie and one particular guy shouted at a student right in front of my mates in his first jump. It was because he didn't see that the pilot chute was trailing behind him when he was walking back from the landing area, a quite awkward think to do somebody in his 1st jump. That put me off for a while and I did't go back there for about a year. Overall Hinton is a nice place, they have a shop with lots of new and 2nd hand stuff and the facilites are OK.

Great place to jump, nice friendly staff and facilities, nice PAC, however be prepared to get wound up when you see Mr tandem-dickhead hook it in with a passenger attached to him every jump. Apart from that I cant fault the place.

I did my first tandem skydive at Hinton, it's got a brilliant atmosphere that totally relaxed me.

The instructors are brilliant, they explain every detail of the equipment and have a reassurance for every possible thing that could go wrong.

Also, excellent cameramen.

We found ourselves in the South near Oxford and needed to jump. As Weston-on-the-Green was closer we went there first and 15 minutes later or so were on our way North for 30 mins 'ish to Hinton (see review for Weston).
Yep, Hinton is the right vibe for me. Very friendly, great for families to let their kids have fun, no attitude, everything that a Skydiver looks for in a DZ. I usually jump at Cark and Hinton now also has a PAC XL750 which is a beauty of a plane (2nd one in the country). Hinton has a vibe very similar to Cark and both are 10/10. Personally, for me Skydiving is about the people on the DZ and the jumping and Hinton is great. I was soon to be offered a 2-way to spice up my first jump there which would have otherwise been a solo (cheers Gordon). If you're near Oxford, go there! If you're in the North - Go to Cark! The nearby Weston-on-the-Green isn't a stitch on Hinton where skydivers and non-skydivers will have a fun, friendly day out. Thankyou for Geoff(Jeff?), Dorian and 'Emmo' for making me feel so welcome. I'll be back.

The thought of chucking your self out of a plane at 12000 feet is scary enough. Actually doing it is another matter. Having done my first jump at Hinton I cannot think of any instructors i would rather jump with. They are friendly enough to calm your inevitably frazzled nerves and professional enough to set you at ease that the only thing to go wrong will be the accidents in your trousers. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff and professionals at Hinton, especially Mike who accompanied me through what turned out to be up there with the best experiences of my life. I will be back very soon. Peace out. Toby Slade-Baker

I recently chose Hinton to host a corporate day of tandem skydives for 20 clients. The day was a fantastic success - the tandem instructors are exceptionally friendly and took a great deal of care to fully brief the group, chat to each student taking time to calm their jangling nerves (where possible!) and make everyone feel comfortable and relaxed.

I have also encouraged my nearest and dearest to do their first jumps at Hinton. I can’t recommend this dropzone more highly, not just for the friendly atmosphere and impressive experience of the tandem instructors but if you are thinking of doing your AFF, then you’ll be amongst the most skilled and encouraging instructors you could wish to learn with.

Thanks to Geoff, Mike and everyone there for making our first corporate day such a success!

What everyone else has said about Hinton is true, it is a great place to jump if you're experienced. If you're making a Tandem, you are taking your life into your hands. I watched one tandem master make hook turn after hook turn. It's only a matter of time before there's an incident, just make sure its not you or someone you love.
