  1. G'day all, does anyone know any sites that has skydiving pics that can be used for a windows desktop? Im looking for something in 1280 x 1024 and ive already gotten sick of the ones on http://www.martijnvandam.nl/ Cheers Mick
  2. So why did skydiving get axed from the X games anyway?
  3. I dont think there is anything in the PAF Op Regs that states you must use a SOS system while still a student ( I could be wrong) so I think it depends on whether the DZ you goto uses a SOS system on their student gear or not
  4. Hey michael, this is (the other) michael from commandos. On exit do a forward loop, just get into position like you are gonna do a dive out exit, grab your legs behind your knees and 'roll' out...very fun :) Have a look around in freefall as well, on all my student jumps i pretty much just looked at my instructor or the ground but actually looking around at the horizon, clouds, countryside etc put the jump in a new perspective. ...oh yeah buy some gloves as well trust me goin to 10 or 12 grand without gloves in melbournes winter in not fun ;)

    Fear in Freefall

G'day im only a 50 jump wonder myself, and thankfully i dont usually get too scared on a skydive (once im out the door) cause once Ive gone past the point of no return I figure I might as well enjoy myself and be safe. Actually my best jump so far isnt one where ive done a few backloops, good track and turns etc but all I did was fly belly to earth for the whole jump just looking around at everything instead of focusing usually on just the one area, for some reason looking at the horizon, sun clouds made me feel so relaxed, I remember looking at my alti at dump height thinking 'Fuck I dont want this to end!' Ever since that jump ive felt so much more relaxed and confident in the air, dont really know why though maybe its because ive realised how beautiful it is up there and appreciate the fact that we are the lucky ones who get to enjoy it Cheers Mick
  6. nah i dont sorry, it was sent to me via email
  7. If you want to court risk then think about horse riding or cycle touring rather than bungying, rafting or skydiving. Findings from a study by Massey University Centre for Tourism Research post-doctoral researcher Dr Tim Bentley, suggest less regulated activities, such as cycling, quad biking and horse riding, have a higher injury incidence when all types of accidents, minor through to fatal, are taken into account. "These activities involve the risk of falling whilst in motion, and operators from these sectors report the highest incidence of 'falls from a height'," says Dr Bentley. Dr Bentley's survey showed 516,722 people took part in organised adventure activities in New Zealand in 1998, though as only half the known adventure tourism operators took part in the survey, the actual figure could be double that. Around half were overseas visitors. Surprisingly, industry supplied figures show cycle touring to be the most dangerous activity with on average 7401 injuries per million participant hours. This was followed by caving (6636), fishing (3164), quad biking (3096). Rounding out the top five was horse riding with 718 injuries per million participant hours. bla bla bla removed ---- This is the first time adventure tourism activities have been surveyed and the data collated across the whole industry. Dr Bentley says it must be remembered that these figures were supplied by the industry operators themselves, which may mean some activities have not declared all their injuries to improve their position. What is notable however, is that those activities we normally think of as being the most dangerous are not so highly placed on the list. Rafting - white and black water - come in at six and seven respectively, but well behind horse riding. Bungy jumping (117) was 10th, jet boating (33) was 13th and skydiving (0 accidents per million hours) had the least accidents, finishing last on the list of 21 activities. Activity mean IMPH ranking Cycle touring 7401 1 Caving 6636 2 Fishing 3164 3 Quad biking 3096 4 Horse riding 718 5 White water rafting 537 6 Black water rafting 483 7 Mountain recreation 216 8 Diving 125 9 Bungy jumping 117 10 Windsurfing 50 11 Marine encounter 48 12 Jet boating 33 13= Adventure education 33 13= All terrain vehicles 25 15 Guided walking 20 16 Kayaking 14 17 Scenic flight 7 18 Eco tour 5 19 Skydiving/parasailing 0 20= Ballooning 0 20= IMPH: Injuries per million participation hours (all types of injury minor through to fatal)
  8. Well I dont know whether its required to have your own rig to do a conversion course, but they definitely prefer it. I think its because there will be less worries for the student who has just converting to BOC/ two shot if they are not jumping different rigs. All comes down to familiarity with the gear. Anyway thats my opinion on it.
  9. Yeah thats what i thought. Unfortunetaly I cant demo other canopies cause ive been jumping rigs with a SOS/ripcord system so I have to do conversion jumps to a two shot/BOC system and they wont allow to do that unless its your own rig. Oh well guess i better keep looking...thanks for the advice
  10. Gday all, Im an A license jumper with about 45 jumps (only about 22 current though) and im in the market for a rig. Im looking at right now, it is a '93 ATOM container with a 190 techno reserve and 170 stiletto. I weigh about 80kg so that gives me a wing loading of about 1.15. Ive spoken to many instructors and the CI at my DZ and they all think that the stiletto will be good for me due to the lower wing loading as long as i fly it conservately. Im a bit worried of what might happen if i stuff up one day and i have to do a downwind landing or similar. Im good under canopy (for my experience level) and I get stand up landings consistantly plus my accuracy is usually about 10m from the target. So far ive jumped a RAVEN 3,4 and a X228. Will this canopy be suitable for me? Any other comments/suggestions? Thanks, Mick
  11. G'day...sorry to hear about the accident, what a bitch eh? Anyway I was just wondering how much you weigh , or in other words whats your wing loading? Im in the same situation you were in, im a begineer looking for a rig, i weigh about 80 kg (so im guessing my exit weight will be roughly 90kg or 200 lbs) and ive been told I should look for a 170 which will give me a wing loading of almost 1.2. ive found a possible rig with a 190 but ive been told ill get bored of it, but for a guy transitioning froma raven 4 (280) it seems like a big step down for me. Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers Mick

At the very least, it will be the best adrenaline rush you've ever had." – Taya Weiss
  13. Congratulations!! I know what its like to pass AFF after such a long time, I did a SL course back in '99 only could go about once a month, failed almost every stage about 3 times (cant remember how many times I dumped on my back!) I hated it, but kept goin back for more. In the end I gave it up for a year, did 2 tandems and came back and did AFF this Janurary, which I passed a few weeks ago (failed stg 6 3 times due to my leg position but once I got past that I flew thru the rest of the stages) it was the best feeling to finally pass it and ring the bell! YAHOO!! Cheers, Mick
