No the BBC is a broadcasting organistion that reports the news. However the Royal Society (the publishers of the report) is probably one of the oldest and most learned academy of scientists in the world (just out of interest is was founded in the 1600s). The report writer was Mike Lockwood, based at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire. You can understand how the reports are published using the links (to the Royal Society and RAL) on the BBC website. For an understanding on how the gathering and reporting of sience news works there might be something on Wiki, can't be arsed to look myself as I feel I understand. We had some blind (totally) tandem students at our dropzone a couple of years ago, the main thing that the instructors did was to spend a lot of time explaining everthing to the students all the way through the briefing, gear up, plane ride, canopy decent, landing and escorting them off the DZ. If you listen to some of the stories about the torture that the CIA are alleged to have taken part in and organised you'll see that the USA are in some cases just as bad as these terrorists. Was a very interesting programme on UK TV about CIA torture flights (I prefer to call a spade a spade so I’m not going to call them “rendition” flights) and the torture that these flights were used to take people to. Not sure if it is in the US, in the UK being able to perform gear checks are part of the JM1 which is required for a "B" license (but can be obtained before). This guy looked like he didn't have much of a clue and had even looked at his chest strap without noting that it was miss-routed. Nick Gravity- It's not just a good idea, it's the LAW!

Was on a lift in Perris last week (team training), while on the climb to altitude I did my normal check over my gear (chest and leg straps, handles and both 3 rings), had a glace at my team mates kit as normal and all was in order. Also had a quick look at the others around me and noticed the the chest strap of the guy sitting opposite me was miss-routed (noted threaded correctly and only held in by the elastic). I pointed it out to him and he just looked at me blankly, so I routed it correctly for him and reported him to the STO (or whatever it's called in the US) and manifest on landing. The guy concerned was called to Square 1 for a gear check lesson. It appeared that the guy didn't have much of a clue about doing gear checks and the guy he was jumping wish looked totally unaware of the concept. My message here is, if you don't know how to check your gear find out how and do it (it only takes a few seconds). Nick Nick Gravity- It's not just a good idea, it's the LAW!

Just to let you know from our trip to Perris neither LHR or LAX security had an issue with the weight a team mate an I carried. We just took it out of our hand luggage and put it through the x-ray machines without a problem. Nick Nick Gravity- It's not just a good idea, it's the LAW!

When I've put my weight belt in my hand luggage and it's gone through the security check it's always caused some concern but they've let me through, last time I flew I took it out and put it through the x-ray machine on it's own, they asked about it but no real problems. A few years ago a team mate put hers in the bag with her rig and checked it, US security went ape and made her take all her stuff out and pop her reserve, must have been bags of lead shot with the Cypres. Agree that people are the problem. However could it not be that guns exacerbate that problem by allowing those problem people to react in an instantaneous (and unfortunate) manner? If the gun wasn’t there the reaction would probably much less severe or by the time the person has obtained a weapon (a pipe bomb has been mentioned elsewhere in this thread) the person would have decided not to react in such a severe way.
