  1. Please tell me you don't have a D license AND believe that wind speed affects descent rate. Please tell little Skypiggie that you're not a student, as it says in your profile, AND believe that wind speed doesn't affect canopy over-the-ground speed for landing. Feel free to do a full, vigorous flare in 20 mph winds. And when you've bled your forward air speed off to zero, you'll find yourself going backwards over the ground at 20 mph...
  2. "Never"? Oh my, Skypiggie thinks that "never" is a mighty big word. What about during higher winds when only a partial flare is needed to bring your descent rate to zero? And in fact, if you flare all the way in high winds, just like you do in light winds, then you're likely to get pulled backwards while still airborne and have a really nasty landing that could hurt you. Aren't there exceptions to everything, including "never"?
  3. Thanks for that explanation, ghost man! This thread reminds me of the legal challenges by prosecutors against pornographers a few decades ago. (Something I've just read about - SkyPiggie couldn't possibly be that old ) If nudity was deemed to be something like art, then it had "redeeming social value", and it was legal and permissable. However, if the nudity was determined to NOT have redeeming social value, like just hard core sex, then it was illegal. So what this waiver item seems to imply, is that skydiving is like pornography...
  4. Look at the data panel on the rig and find the cubic inch volume of the reserve pack. Then go to the back of a ParaGear catalog and find the canopy size chart, which lists all current production canopies and their pack volumes. See how many reserves you can find there that match your cubic inch volume.
  5. Little Skypiggie here has had the same problem for about a year now. I've been locked out of the Bonfire forum, because Quade is convinced I'm a second identity for someone else, when in fact I'm just like you - I sometimes use the computer of that other person when I'm visiting them. I haven't even said anything nasty to deserve a ban. Q has refused to budge and relent on this. So, mods, if you're going to do something about these kinds of situations, please fix mine while you're at it. Skypiggie would like access to Bonfire once again.
  6. What's happening with the land surrounding the runway at Skydive San Marcos? It looks like it's now all for sale, for residential development: http://www.landsoftexas.com/texas/?detail=&inv_id=958845 If a bunch of houses go up around the runway, that will greatly reduce the amount of safe landing area for skydivers to land on. And worse, in the long run those homeowners will grow to resent the skydiving operations, and eventually will try and run them off, even though the skydivers were there first, for a long time...
  7. Correct, but the original poster doesn't seem to acknowledge that. I wonder if she's okay with the natural cycles of feast and famine, which on the downturns, create widespread devastation amongst wildlife. Skypiggie is wondering if she finds that preferable to humans managing the herd at a size where they all get to stay healthy. Especially since predators like mountain lions and wolves are no longer present in large numbers to do the job naturally. For that matter, horses aren't native to North America anyway - they were brought here by the Spaniards in the 1500's.
  8. My oh my, little Skypiggie is surprised that one-third of the poll respondents are okay with giving their paycheck first to the government. It occurs to me this would make it really easy for some future redistribution of wealth scheme which could come to be passed in the legislature. They'll have all that money in one big giant pot, and then they can turn around and dole it back out in whatever proportions they deem fit, to whomever they deem deserving. Guaranteed paychecks for all citizens, working or not? Done! New U.N. taxes to combat "global warming"? Done! What power will you have to say anything to the contrary? Nyet! Good luck with that! Skypiggie out.
  9. Dem Candidate Coons Comes Under Scrutiny in Delaware Senate Race "While most of the attention in the Delaware race to win Vice President Biden's old Senate seat has focused on the Republican candidate, Tea Party favorite Christine O'Donnell, her Democratic rival, Chris Coons, is now coming under scrutiny -- a development that could give O'Donnell's lagging campaign a boost. Coons, 47, has already been targeted by Republicans for an article he wrote for the Amherst College newspaper when he was 21 -- a piece entitled "Chris Coons: The Making of a Bearded Marxist." Coons wrote about his political evolution from a conservative college student who founded the Amherst College Republicans into a Democrat suspicious of America's power and ideals..." http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/09/17/days-decidedem-candidate-comes-scrutiny-delaware-race-bidens-old-senate-seat/ What the heck. If we're going to have all this bashing of what O'Donnell did while she was in high school, I guess it's only fair to look at what her opponent did while he was in college. Right?
  10. UK Proposes All Paychecks Go to the State First "The UK's tax collection agency is putting forth a proposal that all employers send employee paychecks to the government, after which the government would deduct what it deems as the appropriate tax and pay the employees by bank transfer. The proposal stresses the need for employers to provide real-time information to the government so that it can monitor all payments and make a better assessment of whether the correct tax is being paid..." http://www.cnbc.com/id/39265847 Do you trust the government with your paycheck?
  11. And another one... Sanford Bishop steered scholarships to family "Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.) awarded three scholarships from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation to his stepdaughter and wife’s niece between 2003 and 2005, according to records from the nonprofit group. "Bishop is the second Democrat found to have funneled CBC Foundation scholarship funds to relatives, threatening to turn the program into a larger political problem for the party." http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0910/41953.html
  12. Pardon me for getting back on topic. ;-) Now this in the news: "A new controversy has surfaced for Imam Faisal Rauf, the spiritual leader of the proposed mosque and community center near ground zero. According to IPT, the Investigative Project on Terrorism, questions have emerged about how a Muslim group led by Rauf obtained tax exempt status. The group, the American Sufi Muslim Association, ASMA says it “hosted and conducted prayer and meditation sessions…” on its tax exempt application filed in 1998. ASMA listed its established place of worship as 201 West 85th Street, a New York City apartment house. The group claimed average attendance at worship services was between “450 and 500.” The problem according to the Investigative Project on Terrorism is that the building lacks the necessary public space to house that many congregants... " http://liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/09/01/new-questions-for-imam-rauf/ So, was he committing tax fraud, by claiming it was a church, when it really wasn't? And this questionable status is to be piled on top of all of the developer's other bad past history. This story just gets curiouser and curiouser, and an inquiring Skypiggie wants to know. I now return you to your normal bickering.
  13. Doesn't have to be. The First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech..." You guys are defending the mosque based upon the 1st Amendment's freedom of religion clause. KKK gatherings, likewise, also have to be defended based upon the 1st Amendment's freedom of speech clause. Either way, they are both constitutionally protected activities. Therefore, if you favor one, you have to favor the other. Unless you're taking the position that some people deserve constitutional rights, and others don't. But you can't deny one group their rights, just because you don't like them. That would make you just like the people who you are criticizing here for being against the mosque.
  14. The fact that there were muslims in the World Trade Center towers doesn't seem to have deterred the 9-11 attackers, and they killed several dozen. The extremists that carry out those kinds of attacks tend to also want to kill any of their own kind that sympathize or work with Americans, or else they consider such collateral losses as justifiable, as witnessed by weekly events in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  15. Maybe you should learn the lesson that this: http://www.edp.edu.sg/YOG_countries/Syria/708-11-syrian-1990-arab-family.jpg ...is not the same as this: http://www.darleenclick.com/weblog/archives/terrorist_kidnappers-thumb.jpg I never said that they were, sweetie pie. Please don't go putting words in the ol' Skypiggie's mouth that she never said. We were talkin' about Islamofascists here. That's the 2nd photo folks, not the first. Why is it so many of you guys have to portray those of us who speak out against Muslim terrorists, as if we're against all muslims? You really shouldn't try to tar me with that kind of extrapolation, because it ain't there.
  16. http://www.theonion.com/... This is so funny and at the same time so true. How many crazy Extremist Left-Wingers on here sound like this guy?
  17. Gosh, so some people don't like them, yet they don't go around harpooning everyone in retaliation. Like I said, Eskimos aren't terrorists. Maybe the Islamofascists should take a lesson from the Eskimos.
  18. I made no such claim, sweetie. And there's a lot more bad stuff in his past record than just a DUI.
  19. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson says she'll repay scholarship funds by week's end http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/083110dntexebjfolo.a5140066.html U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson awarded eight scholarships last year to her grandsons and a top aide's children – bringing to 23 the number of awards she handed out since 2005 in violation of Congressional Black Caucus Foundation eligibility rules. Ethics experts called Johnson's actions troubling and potentially problematic for her, given that the scholarships violated anti-nepotism rules and went to students who neither live nor study in her district or any other represented by a member of the black caucus, as required. Johnson initially defended her scholarship choices, then acknowledged violating the scholarship rules... She also said that ... she might not have picked relatives had there been more qualified applicants.
  20. News: http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2010/08/30/who-is-the-man-behind-the-ground-zero-mosque/ Sure, we can trust him to have pure motives and to tell the truth...
  21. If there were no Islamofascists, there would be no Islamophobia. Have you ever heard of anyone being Eskimophobic? No, I didn't think so. Because Eskimos don't go around committing acts of terrorism. News: 2 Yemenis From U.S. Suspected of Terror Plot http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/08/31/dutch-question-men-arrested-terror-suspicion-flight-chicago-amsterdam/?test=latestnews But stories like this one keep popping up, over and over and over again...
  22. Senior executives, on-air personalities, producers, reporters, editors, writers and other self-identifying employees of ABC, CBS and NBC contributed more than $1 million to Democratic candidates... Anyone want to discuss bias in the media? http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/Obama-Democrats-got-88-percent-of-TV-network-employee-campaign-contributions-101668063.html
  23. Why is it such a fad for some people to criticize Racers? The Racer has been manufactured continuously since the 1970's. It has been popular because it works, and it's comfortable. What other rig has been in production that long? None.
  24. Wait a minute. You testified against the pilot, who was Bill Dause. Bill Dause is the drop zone owner. Therefore, by testifying against the pilot, you testified against the drop zone. Aren't you playing word games a bit there?
  25. Which event was scheduled and advertised first? But even that doesn't really matter. Every businessman can advertise as he wishes, and then let the best man win. Both events are a lot of fun. Different people like different vibes. I'm sure the Deadmen will do fine.
