  5. Hook... With all the respect that I can muster, and Lord knows you deserve it, how can you make that statement? You simply cannot make the statement that a 'forced resreve deployment' cost this person their life!!! And even if you could make that statement, which you cannot, that still is not even close to the POINT!!! Let us assume for a moment that you or anyone else can come up with an example that having an RSL caused a problem, which you cannot!!! I say again WHICH YOU CANNOT! That still means that the odds of an RSL helping a situation versus hurting a situation are astronomically greater! An educated and experienced man such as yourself must be able to comprehend this? Brett "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  6. Now WHERE IN THE HELL DO YOU GET OUT OF THIS INCIDENT THAT THE RSL CAUSED THIS PROBLEM!!@!! Are you people DAFT? What if this person did not have an RSL and deployed his reserve right after he cut away (as he was taught to do)? Would maybe the same thing have happened? And how about this scenario: He cuts away his main canopy and does nothing else? A far more likely scenario! Use your fucking head! How can you make the statement that an RSL caused this problem? Goddamn you people! "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  7. I have had 29 malfunctions in 29 years in the sport and over 6000 jumps with well over 3000 tandems (incidently, all but eight of those are tandem malfunctions). I feel pretty goddamn qualified to offer a very educated opinion. OF COURSE, an RSL did nothing to affect the outcome for the better in any of my particular situations. That's because I DEPLOYED THE RESERVE! But what about the many jumpers who did not deploy the reserve after a cutaway? Show me an incident where a properly installed Reserve Static Line caused an injury or fatality? Please know the facts! Brett "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  8. What reports? Are you sure about that? Better re-read whatever reports you think you saw. Hey Nate! Thanks for the 'respect' thing. Not so much for me , but for you! I can tell you're wanting to learn and I appreciate that. Brett "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  9. Nate You are simply wrong. With all due respect, you have not been around long enough and had enough experiences to be able to make the above statement. Of course you believe that you can save your own life. And hopefully, you can and will. Unfortunatley, statistics do not back up your statement. The facts remain that you are far more likely to jettison your malfunctioning main parachute and do nothing else (in these cases, having an RSL would most likely make a positive difference) as opposed to having a RSL and it causing any kind of problem. The choice to employ an RSL or not is a personal one, of course. It's a free country. But know the facts when you make the decision. Please, PLEASE don't listen to just anybody. Brett "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  10. Of course not, you stupid fuck! That's because you deployed your reserve! You actually DID IT RIGHT! Will wonders never cease? Have you ever heard of the saying 'You can't prove a negative'? The reason why RSL's exist is because of idiots like you! You wouldn't have lasted two months had you started jumping 30 years ago. Brett NOTE: will one of you moderators PLEASE ban me for life? PLEASE! There are just too many stupid people on this thing! "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  11. WHaaaat? When? Where? Goddamn, you're a menace! Brett "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  12. Derek You cannot be that much of an idiot, can you? Even if what you said is true, which it isn't, the fact remains that jumpers... These things happen! Unfortunately, they happen too often! Apparently, one or more of these situations happened at the convention this year. Having an RSL almost certainly would have affected the outcome for the better in both of these cases. That's two more examples of where having an RSL would have made the difference between life and death. Facts are facts; RSL's can save lives. RSL's do not cost lives. It's scary that there are people out there that listen and believe dumbshits like you. Get out of this business before you get someone killed! Brett "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  13. How can an RSL hurt you if "You cutaway and do not fail to deploy your reserve in time"? The statement that you are making is that the only time an RSL can hurt you is when you jettison the malfunctioning main canopy and then deploy your reserve...?!? You don't really believe that do you? What examples do you have to back that up? Brett "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  14. Erling Olsen? ERLING OLSEN? That guy owes me Money! Brett "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"

  17. Well put, my brother. I have a lot of respect for GOOD cameramen. Andy West, Dave Martin, Dave Hoyt, Mike Bess, Rob Lowe, The Fuller brothers, Rich and Glen...and many more. But ANYBODY with a thousand bucks can be a camera guy. It really irritates that vein in the back of my neck when a video guy tells me to pick up or slow down the fall rate, or face into the sun, or give a better nod and count. It's the cameraman's job to get the shot. The tandem instructor has his hands full as it is. Skill and experience being equal. A tandem instructor is worth more money than a cameraman. If for the responsability alone. "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  18. Just so's ya know....I'm the dad that grounded Jarrett. I would add this thought to consider: How many of you people out there have a son or daughter participating in our sport? Yeeeaaa, didn't think so. "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"

  23. You are correct, Wendy (you as well, John!). But I don't believe I said that one was more important then the other. (sigh) My point was that in the real world of skydiving, not just at Perris or Kapowsin or Toledo, they are equally as important. And my original point was...IT DOESN"T FUCKING MATTER! If God himself came down outta the heavens and told Joe Weber that he was wrong and he needed to rethink his strategy, you know what Joe weber would say? "Big fella, get your own 'gosh darn' dropzone!" I don't even think Joe would cuss at God. "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  24. Yea, and if a jumper farts in the airplane and the pilot passes out and somebody leaves their shoelaces untied... You really are just fucking stupid, aren't you? note to moderator: please ban me for life. You gotta whole bunch of idiots on this goddam site! "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
  25. Hmmm, interesting reply. The thing about this dz.com forum kind of thing is that the subtle nuances of conversation and debate get lost in translation. So I'm gonna go easy on you this time. Plus, you've been around for awhile (apparently) and you deserve a modicum of respect. You are about as closed to getting my point as you would be to hitting an F-16 with a potato gun. I know about separation and ground winds and climb-outs and cameras turning off and go-arounds and a hundred other factors (like turn-around times and aircraft staging, etc.) that you might not have a clue about. I know that larger relative work formations 'typically' fall 'slower not faster'. No shit! You do have me on one point. Teaching. I should have used the term 'point out'. (For you young-un's, service industry professionals and croutons that means 'to make aware of' or in your case 'to be made aware of') What I was 'pointing out' was that the 'drop zone' establishes the 'rules' concerning all of this. The unstated inference is that they have a 'very good reason' for doing it this way and any other way is 'dangerous and incorrect'. At the same time, the next dz down the pike has a whole different set of procedures and policies and they also have 'very good reasons' ...blaa,blaa,blaa Charlie Brown's teacher. They make the rules, scare you with 'em, you follow the rules or get chewed out by someone at the dz that doesn't understand 'the rules' and nobody ever questions them. Thats my point. A secondary point I was trying to make (and you can call this 'teaching' if you want) was a general view of the relationship between vertical and horizontal separation and the skydivers relationship to, and effect on it. I thought I was pretty clear on that (see second sentence above). I was not, in any way, trying to map out a strategy for everyone and every dropzone and every situation and every aircraft. For two reasons, one, it's not my job and dropzone owners won't listen to me anyway (even though a lot of them should) and two, there are a whole lot of different 'situations' out there. maybe I was too lazy to list them all. Those are my points. Simple! Brett "It's only arrogance if you can't back it up"
