  1. one thing I gotta point out here is why would the FFC student be on a not so wingsuit friendly canopy to begin with? that's a bad choice! have a break fire on a cross-braced swoopy machine on your FFC, and you might have to chop it before you even get to think about reaching those toggles... and regardless of how we each feel about different suits, they all let you reach the emergency handles juuuust fine
  2. You make some very good points. However, the issue I see is that we've come to a point where some people can't even take a fart in here without it being too political and generating a whole bunch of strongly opposing reactions. "Oh no!! He farted!!! It must be a really evil fart!!!" While we're on the topic of BOD meeting memories... "Relax, Phil, just relax!! just be calm!!!" Okay just kidding. About this organization... group... thing... whatever... we quickly went from "hey guys, here's a random thought, is this something worth pursuing?" to "there is a conspiracy going on! KILL KILL KILL" Speak of being transparent... this is what happens when you're too transparent, too early. The idea didn't even get finished but the community was told about it, and now look at this whole mess of a thread over something that is still in the works and hasn't even been properly set up yet. Just because someone tried to keep things as open as possible. While an idea is still just getting developed and hasn't matured enough to be worth discussing publicly yet, it is just silly to post here every little detail that will in another 10 seconds actually get changed or dismissed. How about we all hold off for a little while and see if this even ends up going anywhere. We're only talking about something along the lines of research group for fuck's sake! It's not like we're declaring war to each other! (though Scotty did once have a very good idea about some girl on girl jello-wrestling to settle all the wingsuit drama once and for all ) If/when more details are available, it'll be good to hear various opinions and feedback. Until then, stay safe and keep flying!
  3. awww, the guy simply posted a video... I didn't see any claims of being "the best" or "the first" or whatever... who cares if it's been done by others someplace else? and who cares who paid for it? it's just some fun flying to look at.
  4. if you're choosing between those two, definitely summerfest has the bigger wingsuiting crowd. if you're looking for even more options, check out the calendar on wingsuitnews for info about more boogies to come... there are many events, from small to big... lots of choices! all great fun!
  5. good job saving your life, man! and thanks for posting and sharing the knowledge... correct me if I'm interpreting this the wrong way, since 700 ws jumps is whole lot... are you saying in those 700 flights you didn't really do any aerobatics at all? specifically, do you backfly much? or, rather, did you use to backfly when you had a smaller suit? It kinda see a pattern here... where someone will avoid learning how to fly on their back, do scary rolls, gravitrons and anything in that realm, for fear of flatspins... and then upsizing to the bigger suit, the lack of being used to dealing with these types of situations can make things worse really quickly. should we be teaching people to be afraid of aerobatic maneuvers that may put one in a flatspin, or should there be more emphasis on instability training early on? (just like in AFF those barrel rolls and front/back flips are a necessary evil to help the student learn how to deal with going from a different position back into the stable one) just some food for thought. again, good job saving your life.
  6. apparently a wingsuit category was once added to those disciplines but the list of disciplines with links going to each category of articles was never updated. the wingsuiting folder appears to have 2 articles in it so far the folder seems to be inside "disciplines" just like everything else, judging by the breadcrumb trail shown on the page.
  7. nope, it's not that, cause I got all the emails. Yes, but you have "Super" status, Supergirl. mommy always told me I was "special"
  8. nope, it's not that, cause I got all the emails.
  9. sweet!! hope you guys get some cool formations to submit to the docked challenge and we see another step forward in there!
  10. a version that will run in a web browser should run fine on the iPad... especially if it's javascript like we talked about...
  11. Tom, I was just taking a look at the Mantis bugtracker you set up... To report an issue, I have to assign it to a "project", but no projects are listed for me to choose from, and as a "reporter" I do not have the privileges to create any new projects. -a Edit: issue fixed. thank you, Tom.
  12. works fine for me. maybe the email never made it past your spamblocker... if you used your university email to sign up, your department might have some fancy virus scan in place that likes to occasionally give too many false positives... I know my dept email sometimes has that issue...
  13. keep jumping, it should be no problem to hit 200 by next year's flock n dock. see you there!
  14. next time Tom jumps with us I am offering my skills in getting extra altltude on every load we're on :) shoulda done more of that at FnD anyway :)
  15. Actually the latest discussion I recall was about working towards a web-based app that runs in whatever browser you have, rather than pc vs mac vs whatever. I am very much in favor of that. Yes, eventually we will want a platform-independent thing. Trust me, guys, as a mac user myself that was one of the first things I bitched about. However, we all need to be patient here... remember there is a programmer spending lots of time and getting nothing in return, so the least we can do right now is be nice rather than throw nasty remarks about "some being more equal than others". Improvements will come. This is still beta, for fuck's sake. There is still work to do. And some of it needs to be prioritized, with some things addressed sooner than other things...
  16. Very nice. I could see how the "Kallend" method is used for a formation based on a diamond geometry, but not for any other design. It wasn't covered in the video. Maybe I'm missing something, or is the possibility of an arbitrary design not implemented yet? correct. not implemented yet. this is only the first iteration that includes stuff regarding your method. Yes, we need to allow for arbitrary positioning of those circles, otherwise it beats the whole purpose. Patience...
  17. you guys are talking about two different things. Mike, your base scaling method makes sense - however, it refers to modifications to the current uspa judging criteria. the software here does not take into account height of the person. the dot is on the head. What Jarno was trying to explain about the base flyers being used for measurements was this: - you place your first dot on the head of the base - then you connect that to the next two flyers - afterwards, you connect the rest of the formation - if you do things this way, the first two lines are shaded blue, everything else gets black/red - blue means those two are used to evaluate the rest of the formation. the 3-way at the top (base flyer and next 2 flyers) sets the spacing for the rest of the formation - black means a distance between two other flyers is between x % of the average of those two blue lines at the top and the angle is within y degrees of either 45 or 90, whichever you selected, where x and y are your set tolerances - red means one of two things: the angle is too bad, or the distance is too bad (exceeds allowed tolerance) making sense?
  18. Here is the software platform for analyzing wingsuit formations, debriefing, and potentially evaluating different judging methods. Clicky Tom has kindly provided a download link as well as a brief video tutorial for the software he's spent countless hours implementing and improving. Thank you, Tom, you're a superhero. Please keep in mind this is still a beta version, and many improvements are still considered on the todo list, and your feedback is of great value. Play with the tool, insert your wingsuit formation pictures, connect the dots, and see who's flying their slot better. Jump more and use it for debriefs, and come up with new methods that could be integrated. Let's see how far we can take this!
  19. hey, if there's no video/pics, it didn't happen! (though wish there'd been a camera to capture the look on Kathy's face when you guys stood up to greet her) Now speaking of pictures, our awesome photographers have shared some of their stuff online, and for those of you who haven't already seen the numerous photo albums on Facebook, here are some non-facebook links: Scotty Burns / Sky Squared Productions photos: smugmug gallery clicky Jeff Donohue / Drunkn Skwrl Productions: smugmug gallery clicky Enjoy! And a big hug to all our photographers!
  20. ohhhh shiiit... I smell a reenactment of the Chaaaarlie episode in Spot's hot tub.... "Chaaarlieee... Does Purple Mike have purple bloooood??" Whatever happened to that video anyway? :D
  21. I'm bringing my Skwrl Shu.
  22. oh yea that's right!! totally missed it... my bad... on the back cover. good one!
  23. I was just thinking the same thing... let's see how many wingsuiters we see (including ads and stuff): Scott Campos, Matt Hoover, Andreea Olea, Mark Krazinski, Jarno Cordia, Scott Bland, Purple Mike, Justin Shorb, Patrick de Gayardon, Loic Jean-Albert, Jari Kuosma, Stephane Zunino, Robi Pecnik, Jeff Nebelkopf, Tony Uragallo, [skipping a whole bunch of flyers in a bigway], Peter Hazelhust, Taya Weiss, Joe (Joner) Rodriguez, Ted Cheslek, Alex Frey, Jason Weisberg and then if we count photo credits we also get Jeff Donohue and Scotty Burns. (Matt already mentioned above). Now THAT's a shitload of wingsuiters! Not bad!! Don't forget Scott Callantine's picture of Jason Carter in Blue Skies Mag centerfold, too!
  24. now THAT's one boogie not to miss. can't wait!
