  1. LMAO.. tackle you out the door?.. what level is that?..LOL
  2. Great story. I did my fisrt and second aff jump that week.. What an awesome new jumper experience.. In my head I was thinking .. this place is off the hook.. then I realized .. it was a huge event..LOL
  3. Im in my AFF level 3 now.. the training is pretty fresh in my head.. my AFFI tells me to do a controlability check if it passes to land it.. from what Im hearing here.. that its better to just cut and not gamble with it.. is that the bottom line? he says that if Im 100% that I can land it safely then keep it.. if not cut away.. so.. with out the same experience of knowing if Im going to fast.. should i EP? also.. say I do my controlability check and Im all good.. what is the possibility of something going wrong after that? and would you just ride it in if something weird happend around 1k '? or pull silver on top of your main thanks
  4. I see you have lots of jumps... do you do anything special to strengthen your back? how many jumps can you do in one day before your back becomes an issue?
  5. Im new too.. my first jump was a rush ... and I put a lot of presure on myself to do all the procedures.. then I went home and dreamed about it.. really gave it a lot of thought ... the next jump was way more fun.. and felt a lot longer.. what ever advise that you get other than what to eat the day before will go right out the window when you get to the door.. Trust your instructors.. ask lots of questions.. practice on your breaks.. dont feel stupid for going over the movements on the ground .. it looks funny.. but I attribute that to having a clean jump where some of the other students who didnt take it seriously fumbled their first jump.. the other thing.. test your radio.. the JM will come in your ear and give you some guidence as you decend.. TRUST your JM.. dont flare till they tell you too.. You body will tell you to flare early... Just wait.. they will tell you when to do it.. I would have flared early if I didnt listen to my JM.. as you can tell.. Im a really excited new guy.. Hope you have half as much fun as I am.. good luck and report back with us Mark
  6. you are spot on with the arch.. I think that may have done it.. Hard arch out of the plane.. Im doing much better and think I should be pain free by next wed.. I am pretty active and have not had to wear a back brace for a long time..and I dont plan on it again.. I was just wondering if people did it.. I know there are some things I can do to stregthen my back .. thanks for the reply .... on my last jump we did forward movement.. I felt like I was flying instead of falling.. when I dragged the two JM's accross the sky it gave me a huge buzz.. cant wait to move on to the next level/task.. but im responsible enough not to do it if I know Im going to get hurt.. Mark
  7. Thanks for the advice. I was going to wait until I was pain free before jumping again. I think along with some special exercise and stretching I should be good.. My back has messed with me since my early 20's.. I was just wondering if people wore them for preventive situations.. kinda like knee braces.. It really sucks .. Im so strung out on jumping right now.. I cant wait to jump again… but I will let my body heal before jumping.. I figure a couple weeks and I’ll be on to level 3 Thanks Mark
  8. I have only heard you guys talking about it.. but have know idea what it is.. is it a back flip? thanks
  9. Does anyone jump with a back brace? I sprained my back last week.. kinda like a wiplash.. Its getting better... and I'll jump again in a couple weeks.. but just wondering if anyone here does it.. and pros and cons to it.. thanks Mark
  10. Why not discuss it with your instructors and tell them the SIM says one thing and you thought you were taught to do another. You may find you misunderstood your instructors or that your instructors made a mistake. Alternatively, they will explain to you why they feel they are right and the SIM is wrong. In any case you will learn something. Don’t’ ever be afraid to ask questions! That’s great advise and I will for sure discuss it with them.. I got my hands on the SIM through these boards.. so I have been reading it a lot.. When we discussed biplane or side by side they were very specific on how to deal with this.. they said.. Make sure the toggles match.. if one set of toggle is out.. Release the others so the they both match.. they also said in a bi plane to steer the front chute with the rear risers and if side by side to steer the rear outside risers with very little input.. and no flare.. they said if the chutes separate by 10' to cut away to avoid down plane. that seems to make sense to me.. but after reading the SIM I will ask them for more detail in why they believe what they tell us in AFF. Maybe its because AFF students have very little experience and when all said and done.. this might be the safest way for a student to react.. either way.. thanks for the reply.. I dont take everything I read in these forums to heart.. but .. it always puts a healthy debate in my head.. I'll bring it up on my next jump. thanks again Mark
  11. this is not what they taught us in class.. Im not sure why.. but Im going with what my coaches tell me
  12. There is still some debate, but I agree with how you were trained. The problem is releasing the brakes may turn a stable bi-plane into a wrap or downplane at low altitude. 2-canopies out can be very un-predictable. Derek aggreed that they any changes can make for an unpredictable ride.. but if you seperate your shutes by 10' then you should cut away anyway?..I understand at low alt you shouldnt make any sudden changes if you on your way to a safe landing.. but I was told that the shutes are much less predictable if the toggles dont match. Keep in mind.. I only have 2 jumps.. very little experience.. but what I can share is what they are teaching in AFF because its freash in my head.
  13. I sort of agree with you, it would be good if every eventuality had been covered in the FJC. However, I wonder whether it could lead to information overload? I often wonder how much of the stuff people are taught in their FJC actually is in a 'readily accessible' place in their mind when they actually jump. I had a malfunction as a student I had never heard about, went back to basics 'is it big, square and controllable', did control checks and decided to cut away. I think we should put more stress on this element than try to talk about all possible eventualities. Doing a 'big square controllable' check should help identify why the main is diving and positioned further forward. tash You mentioned information overload.. In AFF they have pounded this situation into my head.. being new.. I hope I would react with a cut away.. because thats what they tell us to do.
  14. Im new to all this.. but.. should he have left the toggles and steered with the rear riser from the front p shute? from what I understand.. your supposed to leave the toggles matched.. if they are stowed in the back you leave the front stowed.. and visa versa.. is this the wrong thing to do? they also told us no need to flare with two shutes out.
  15. thanks for the warm welcome.. There is an event that I will be attending in Perris on the weekend of the 21st.. Looking forward to meeting some of you guys then. I have a back ache now.. if it goes away.. I'll jump a couple times this weekend and get some tunnel time.... It was suggested to me to go in the tunnel between level 3-4.. is that something you have done? and would you do it it different? thanks Mark
  16. I’m new to the boards and wanted to say HI!.. I have been chasing this feeling for a long time.. didn’t know where I would find it.. but .. I think I did.. I raced bikes, cars, karts and now boats.. the rush for each one of those things are killer but much different from what I have gotten so far out of skydiving.. So far I have got 5 people to come with me.. when they see how excited I get over it.. they want some!..lol.. One of my team drivers and his brother are in the AFF school with me.. I’m jumping out of Perris ca. I’m an AFF student and on level 3.. I’m on boating message board and over the years have met tons of cool people.. We use it to organize trips and events.. I’m looking forward to meeting some of you getting some of that here. Mark
  17. I have been talking about it for a while.. My buddy called me out on it.. and payed for it..LOL.. I have jumped twice this month and am on level 2 of aff.. strung out like a research monkey.. Quote
  18. this is actually exactly what I was looking for.. Im on level 2 of my aff training.. Next week I will take level 3 and it mentioned spotting.. up until now.. I asked them.. where are we?.. instructor said.. dont worry about it yet.. so I trusted him and jumped when he told me to.. the first jump was really close to the DZ.. my second jump seemed to be pretty far away.. I pulled at 5k and got to my DZ at about 1500'... I shaved off some alt and started my leg.. It ended up being a really good jump.. but with out any experience I was a little nervous about getting back to my DZ.. thanks for the info on this post Mark
