What short-sighted people don’t realize is that when the bottom 10% is repeatedly eliminated, eventually they’re part of that bottom 10%
    Wendy P.

No that will actually stop long before it gets to those who actually matter. You eliminate the bottom 10%. Then poor people from other countries will flock in to fill that 10% back up. Plus poor people breed more rapidly than rich. So you have a continual stream of poor people to exploit.

Well, to be fair, they refused their own citizenry entry

And why shouldn't they. That makes perfect sense. Their citizens come here, work a little bit, and get the virus. You wouldn't want them going back home and spreading this in Mexico. Keep them in the US. Plus you get the added benefit of having those people not burdening the Mexican healthcare system. Make them stay in the US and burden that system. It is a win-win situation.

The more I think about it, this whole virus action/inaction is all parts of Trump's master plan to limit the influx of illegal aliens. Well played, Trump. Well played.

Meh, I don't need any more titles. I already have the title of "Lord of the Known Universe". Now if he instead would have given me 1/2 million dollars immediately because he just needed to pay rent on his safe deposit box in order to get the contents, I would have been all in.

  4. So just today I received my refund for my 2019 federal income tax. Submitted my return (e-file with direct deposit) in mid March. All I got back was what was listed on my return. Where are the late fees and penalties for taking so long?  Also there was no mention on how I'm supposed to give this money to Elon Musk or Tesla. It is almost like the money is mine to keep. That just can't be right according to what I've read from some people.

Someone please help me out. What am I supposed to do with this money? If I don't have to give it to Tesla, I guess I'll have to use it to boost the economy and buy solar panels, new table saw, or some other items I would like to own.

And I thought global warming was going to make for more tornadoes.

No, no, no. You have it all wrong! The warning was that global warming was going to make for more tomatoes. Not tornadoes - tomatoes. Tomatoes are really only good for pizza sauce and ketchup (maybe salsa too). Having an increase in tomatoes in this world is a plague that we cannot afford and should be prevented at all costs. That is why global warming has to be curtailed immediately.

  6. We need to eradicate the bees. They are dangerous and every chance I get I kill as many as I can find. Not sure about the numbers but doing a quick search, according to (the) "CDC recorded 1,109 deaths" from bee stings. Those insects have to be eliminated. Many people live in fear of being stung by them. For the life of me I don't know why people want more of those disgusting creatures around.

    End bee tyranny now.

  7. This is just a temporary setback. Coal will be back bigly when we start investing in beautiful clean coal. Some people are saying all you need to do to get clean coal is to wash it with Dawn dishwater soap. That seems promising to me. We should investigate that. I mean what do we have to lose?

They all taste like chicken. But I'll wait till they have imitation bat claws and imitation bat wing parts included. A true Chinese taste experience for only .20 cents.

Might as well add in Rhinoceros horn too. Just for some added zest.

Were he to quit because Trump was costing American lives I think that would be a very powerful weapon.

Yes, but quitting now is way to early. He will be long forgotten by Nov. Anyone bring up Sarah Huckabee Sanders anymore?

Our two party system continues to suck.

Now is the time (more than any other) where we need to elect a 3rd party candidate. The current administration has proven that any idiot can be president. So it really doesn't matter (unlike what both parties have said for years) who is elected. Electing a 3rd party will send a message to the Ds & Rs that they need to clean house and nominate/get behind someone of quality. But I highly doubt that they would take that stance.

Tesla's horrible Q1 results have nothing to do with Covid.

Just an FYI. The Q1 results were not horrible. They actually exceeded expectations. What you have to look at is year-over-year sales since the auto industry is cyclic. And given that, they were up 40% over Q1 2019. (https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/02/tesla-tsla-1q-2020-production-and-delivery-numbers.html)

And remember a year ago, the short sellers were saying that Tesla was going bankrupt and driving the price of their stock down?

Let's compare that to Ford's Q1 sales, "Ford Motor (NYSE:F) said that its U.S. sales fell 12.5% in the first quarter from a year ago" (https://www.fool.com/investing/2020/04/02/fords-first-quarter-sales-fell-125-but-rougher-wat.aspx)

So Tesla increased their production and sales for Q1 in 2020 over 2019 which included shutting down 2 of their factories due to COVID-19. While Ford lost 12% in sales over that same time frame.

    But wait, what about GM? Buick - down 34.7%, Cadillac - down 15.8%, Chevrolet - down 3.8%, GMC - down 5.5% (https://www.fool.com/investing/2020/04/02/general-motors-us-sales-fall-7-in-first-quarter-pr.aspx)

The stimulus part of giving a check for taxes paid, back to the taxpayer, is just that - giving the money back.

But what about all this that I hear about giving $2000 checks to the poor (individuals) who made too little to pay any income taxes? I'm all for me getting my money back. But we should not be giving money in this stimulus to those that are too poor to have paid taxes in the first place. Right?

  12. @billvon

    1) I agree that home generally don't need cooling/heating. I just mentioned it in case someone who lives where temperatures can get close to 32F would want to use a Tesla pack (outside). Would need heating in that case. For me, my ultimate plan would be to run my entire house off grid. I would need up to 16 (to 25) kW continuous. Granted I may not need it when using a 2SxP configuration - depending on how large "x" is, but just having the capability to cool it already built in is a major bonus when dealing with "2nd life" batteries.

A battery from a used 2011 Leaf runs about $1000 from a junkyard.

Where are you getting your information from? The best I see out there is approx. $1100 for a partial battery (7kW not 12kW). That is a reasonable price but you can buy used Tesla modules - which include cooling/heating channels, sometimes BMS, etc. - for $1500 including shipping for 5 kW 24V. The Tesla is IMO a way better deal given all the additional safety benefits plus I'm not sure you have the current capability to draw significant power from a leaf battery without overheating or massively oversizing that battery bank.

But I agree. Using wrecked/used vehicle batteries for fixed storage is the way to go and that is what I'm planning on doing in my home.

  14. Wow, just wow! (According to the article) I didn't realize I'm part of the "uber-wealthy". Maybe I should put that on my dz.com profile.

It’s an expensive write-off that mostly benefits the uber-wealthy, who buy electric cars as status symbols and tokens of environmental consciousness...

I stopped reading pretty much after that sentence. Oh that and the link posted above wanted me to click another link to read the full column. As a matter of principal I never do that. But seriously, the author does not know what he is talking about especially now (one year later). I did not buy my car because of some "environmental consciousness", although that is a nice side issue/benefit. I bought it because it was by far the best vehicle in its segment for real world (on-the-road) driving. That is why Teslas are better than other cars out there. Acceleration is fantastic. I love being first at a stop light and when the light turns green and flooring it until you get to 60 or 70 MPH. And then there is no one around you until all the speeders catch up to you. Handling is good enough. I mean really, how often do you need to go around a curve with a posted speed of 45 MPH and you are going 70+ where the added performance would make a difference? Autopilot - while still needs work - is making improvements to make your life easier. And getting updates at least once a month if not more that adds more functionality to the vehicle - all for free.

And for the record, I do not think Brent is an idiot, dense, or whatever. I feel he is misguided in his beliefs with regard to the environment. And that is fine, I would bet he thinks that about me too. Unfortunately, if one of us is wrong that has dire consequences for the world as we know it today. If the other of us is wrong, I don't see there being any lasting effects to that decision.

  15. Actually, not. I would have bought the car without the tax cut, anyway. In my opinion, it is the best car out there in it's segment. Therefore, my money went to Tesla, not the government's. It is nice to finally get a tax break for something meaningful to me (like buying a new car) vs. the useless tax credit you get for procreating. But that is a different subject, so I won't get into that thread drift.

And why the hate on Tesla, EVERY electric car whether it is made by an American company (like Tesla) or a foreign company (like Byton) is eligible for the tax credit.

  16. I agree that brenthutch quite doesn't understand how this works.

Fact 1: Three months ago I bought a Tesla. It is paid for in full. I am not giving Tesla any more money for the purchase of the vehicle.

Fact 2: Come February 2020 when I do my federal taxes (and receive my hopeful refund), I will NOT be sending that money to Elon Musk.

Fact 3: I will probably NOT trickle that money down to anyone else either. For the past 3 years, I have sent any federal refund money directly into my retirement fund. I don't see any reason why I will change that next year.

This is not too difficult to understand. Not sure why someone who appears to be intelligent cannot comprehend these simple facts.

  17. I don't think Trump will ever see impeachment - no matter what he does. Here is why, I believe that Nancy Pelosi and the like are convinced that Trump will be easier to beat in an election than President Pence. Therefore, the dems could put any piss poor asshat up against him and beat him in an election. It would not surprise me that she even thinks that Hillary could become the nominee and beat Trump. So by keeping Trump in office, the dems could nominate a centrist establishment candidate who isn't going to make changes to the system. And since both parties have convinced the masses that there are only two viable parties in this country, you peasants will vote for "anyone but Trump". So it is a win-win for everyone involved in politics. But the rest of us lose...

  18. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-nurburgring-lap-time-vs-porsche-taycan/

Yet another win for Tesla. Unofficial results for sure, but still. Once again proves even legacy "performance" car manufacturers can't seem to compete with the Tesla design team.

With the introduction of its Plaid Powertrain and three-motor setup for the Model S sedan and Model X SUV, Tesla appears to be setting the stage for the release of a line of vehicles that are excellent both in a straight line and on the track. Together with the next-generation Roadster, Tesla’s Plaid Model S and X will likely establish once more that electric cars are simply superior to their gasoline and diesel-powered counterparts in every metric.

I personally can't wait (and wish I have the money) for the next gen roadster. If they can do this with a passenger car, imagine what can be done with a specific built sports car.
