  1. all the earlier pop tops were like this.even racers and sst's
  2. white reserve would be slightly lighter and less bulky due to no color dye in the fabric
  3. also f111 is diferent than other that fabrics that existed before it in that the individual fibers are not twisted before weaving. that is why f111 had that transparent look, but it is the reason harris was able to make it come in at 1.11 oz per square yard.remember that up till F111, all fabrics were woven from fibers that were twisted first, thus they are heavier.
  4. F111 is fluorocarbon (F) treated ripstop nylon fabric which weighs 1.11 oz per square yard hence F111.the fluorocarbon finish is an ultraviolet inhibitor which makes the fabric last longer. it is calendered(i.e squished under heat and pressure )to an air permeability of 0 to 3 c.f.m.F 111 was trademarked name like xerox but has come into generic use. george harris corp developed F11 nas consequently went out of business after mr harris died.
  5. parachute equipment corp has been around for years.used to be parachute associates.warren eichhorn worked at the chute shop in the 70s as they worked on bringing their para foil to market.back then para flite was the only mfr of ram airs.warren really knows his shit. call him ,he'll give you service and a deal.
  6. ah yes the proverbial "getting screwed".when the first square reserve was introduced(1978,the safety flyer)it was a requirement to have a ram air riggers certificate(issued thru para flite and the uspa).we heard several reports of riggers with the ram air certificate charging as much as double the going rate for a repack simply because they could. in at least one instance this price gouging lead to a jumper NOT deploying his reserve due to the exhorbitant cost of repacking.
  7. yes i remember that helmet. i met him in 1966 when he and the rest of the U.S.parachute Team were training in new jersey. this weekend i saw the NHRA drag racing on tv. and one of the team owners was a guy named Roy Johnson.after looking closer, i think it could be him,tho its been almost 40 years since i saw him.does anyone know if he has a son named allan ?and do they race?
  8. any of the old timers know if Roy Johnson is still around.he was the style champion for a number of years in the 60s into the 70s.
  9. permanent magic markers contain CARBOLIC ACID.
  10. so do you need the class 3 license to use or possess one of the superior brand type bomb with the pull wire?
  11. i once saw a 65 pound pull.it was the result of one rigger who decided to shorten up the loop on a vector to tidy up an existing pack job. this guy is still in business on the east coast selling gear.BE VERY AFRAID
  12. actually with colored smoke bombs ,everything ive read of a technical nature says the higher the humidity, the denser the smoke will be.
  13. this is directed at anyone who has jumped with smoke. have you ever had a smoke bomb that turned out to be a dud?what caused it? also, what would be the ideal smoke duration ,and colors?
  14. para flite (the originator of the square reserve0 filmed over 100 drop tests(live and dummy).some of those drop test films were released as a super 8 film to dealers as a sales tool.it did indeed work. however as containers evolved, and freebags got tighter, the forces to extract the bagged canopy from the container increased thus resulting in the current situation. by the way, the square reseve was drop tested primarily out of a wonderhog container with no mods other than adding a rear riser to accomodate the four link set up.
  15. the yellow warning area was added around the same time frame (about 1978 or 79).the narrow needle units were made by "BAC". around 1973 the mechanisms were actually changed over to a unit made by Revue/Thommen in switzerland.the original units (circa 1964 were made by U.S. Gauge) and have a wide needle. a word of caution.... do not try to remove the needle on a Revue/Thommen unit or later .the needle shaft is VERY brittle and will break off in the jewel if you dont have the proper needle removing tool.but then you probably shouldn"t be messing around in there anyhow.
  16. steve snyder changed the name to sse around 1979 or so. he claimed that it was on his lawyers advice(so he couldnt be sued personally).i cant recall the exact year but it was around that time. does your altII have the narrow needle or the wide needle?
  17. thats just one of snyds MANY patents. he was quite the designer.
  18. Steve Snyder designed and patented what he called the "V cell" back in the late 60s or early 70s.the crossbraced designs pretty much fall under those now expired patents. "Aint no such thing as an original idea"
  19. the howard dga 15 is good airplane.back in 1966 the one they had at united parachute club in Pa. went in .aircraft stalled at about 500 feet(pilot error)and barrel rolled left onto its back and went in with a full fuel load .only one jumper survived after exiting the aircraft while the door was straight up.second jumper got out too low. steve snyder had a howard at the time (he named his first son Howard) but after the crash at united no one wanted to jump it.so he sold it to poppenhager.
  20. years ago(1978) when i worked at para flite we had some people from the U.K. that we were training .i believe they were with the Red Devils or the R.A.F.,anyway, i was told that the reason they dont use seals over there is because years ago a lead seal came off a rig and found its way into the channels in the floor where the control cables go to an aircraft"s tail.the seal had weged itself in such a way that the cables jammed.(hence the control surfaces could not be moved)
  21. increased snatch force due to the larger area of the slider, also.
  22. ive known dave for about 40 years. i lived next to steve snyders dropzone in nj where dave was frequent visitor .one day dave landed on my dads property and broke his ankle.
  23. you do realize that this is a picture of Dave DeWolf, rite?
