  1. weird. i remember when i posted this thread a million years ago! just a little nightmare i like to call marriage in chicago....well, chicago was pretty awesome, but phooey to the rest of it. that house ended up getting weirder and weirder, in case anyone's interested. i never saw anything ghost-ish, but birds, rodents, and various other animals started turning up dead in the yard and the dogs never did settle all the way down. one night i woke up at like 4am to 3 raccoons in my kitchen..they were acting as freaked out as the dogs. strange. then my belongings and money started disappearing... oh wait..that was my husband Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  2. ok, i'm a bartender....also, i have never been the least bit interested in halloween. apparently, tomorrow night it is mandatory that the staff show up in costume or be written up/sent home. i think its crap, but oddly they don't care what i think. i only work fri and sat, so while everyone else knew about this all week- i just found out 5 minutes ago. my initial plan was to wear a white t-shirt with the words "halloween costume" written on it (in black and orange of course!)..but i'm thinking that might not be good enough. i need something clever and witty - i just cannot bring myself to stick devil horns or cat ears on my head. the quick, traditional halloween costumes just blow. i was thinking of wearing this black slip that i have, and somehow putting the word freudian on it somewhere. over tights of course. ugh. ya'll are clever. help. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  3. at the risk of sounding naive, maybe "not knowing the ways of washington" isn't such a bad thing. i'm certainly not pleased with the current ways and perhaps not having had the time to become jaded and cynical and clouded, while it may be a bumpy journey, might do us all some good. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  4. I don't get it either. Here we have a candidate with very limited experience, no accomplishments as a politician, and associations with extremists...yet people are going to vote for him because he's not a Republican. when are americans going to realize that white christians are not the only people in this country, nor are they the only ones deserving of representation and advocacy on their behalf? get over yourselves! and, if you really want to travel down the "shady" road of american politicians with ties to extremists, terrorists, etc....i can name a whole bunch of old wrinkled white dudes who have funded and/or profited off of not so noble causes ("terror" included). and btw..i got my data from submedia.tv..i'd say that's about as reliable as sean hannity. i'll let you decide how serious i am Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  5. Yes, and so is Bill Ayers' home and not to mention the Syrian slumlord convict Obama supporter Rezko. Sounds like a nice neighborhood doesn't it? yikes...don't credit me for that statement lol billyvance can keep it, i just quoted it. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  6. Isn't Farrakhan's home just a few blocks away from Obama's? wow, i guess that answers my question in the other thread. armed with gross misinformation, fed to them by clearly biased news people (on both sides), americans head to the polls. yikes. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  7. i didn't watch it, but i think i'll see if i can find it online somewhere if it influenced you enough to decide your vote. one thing i've learned - especially this year: anybody can make anything look and seem perfectly factual/letigimate if they try hard enough. can you be 100% certain that whomever produced the show was being truly objective in what they aired? i find it strange that all this exposure - on both sides - about who knew who and why, is what is going to be the deciding factor for voters. with the understanding that literally everything being exposed about the 2 of them is going to be tainted with partisan propaganda (i'm assuming most people have that understanding) and the awareness of so many critical issues we, as a nation, are facing, how is this what is pushing people over the edge in one direction or another? is that seriously what matters most? i just don't get it. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  8. He came across as a pretty staid guy overall. One commenter compared him to a "redwood forest." "McCain fired some cannonballs into it, but afterwards, it was still a redwood forest." I liked an analogy i heard after the VP debate. something like "joe biden was shooting a rifle and sarah palin was just throwing bullets". seems a bit more fitting tonight, i think... Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  9. it felt to me like after the acorn and ayers allegations, mccain fell apart but that could just be me. i just kept thinking 'grouchy old man'. "HEY YOU KIDS GET OFF MY LAWN!" there was so much he said that wasn't even offensive to my personal and/or political beliefs - it just didn't make any damn sense. still don't know what to make of it all. hmmm... Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  10. did your wife explain her thoughts? i'm not criticizing her at all, but i really got up after that debate expecting to see the whole country laughing at McCain. i was completely convinced that he'd ruined himself. while most of the early polls and voting side with me there, i'm surprised at how much praise i'm seeing for John McCain. one thing that really stuck out to me: mccain has said more than once that he doesn't believe in rewarding or engaging a country that condones the oppression of it's people. yet he's pro CAFTA, and was quick to make note of obama's willingness to meet with chavez - even though obama included ridding the US of its dependence on Venezuelan oil in his energy plan.both countries are guilty of human rights violations as far as i'm concerned..i just don't get it. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  11. headed to DC Nov. 7-10th for the Genocide Intervention Network/STAND student conference. My days will be full of conference related events, but my nights will be free. I know most of the touristy stuff (tours, museums, etc) will be closed, but I'm definitely looking for suggestions for (cheap) restaurants, bars, scenic stuff that you can see regardless of time, etc. i've heard the monuments and statues are beautiful at night! its my first time there, so i'm really excited! any thoughts? PS: is public transportation as confusing as i've heard it is? Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  12. i read this http://chronicle.com/news/article/4446/bush-signs-student-loan-bailout-bill-into-law from a bill apparently passed in May, and then http://chronicle.com/news/article/5279/bailout-bill-with-benefits-for-student-lenders-passes-congress about the current bill. i just don't understand the terminology. i read it and just think "oh crap". Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  13. my apologies if this has already been addressed... i know a lot of you are very well versed on the bailout bill and the overall impact on "main streeters". as a student who depends on the ability to receive loans, am i going to be affected? most of what i read is regarding mortgages, but i'd imagine that all areas of lending will be affected. thanks from a scared student! Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  14. what i opposed is that she said she does not support gay marriage which,as far as i'm concerned, is a right, but then spoke quite loudly about her belief in equal rights. had biden made that comment, believe me i'd have commented on him, too. i am not a decided voter. i've never voted republican but that doesn't mean i won't. granted, if anything were going to keep me from voting mccain, it would be palin. i just fundamentally disagree with her on too many issues. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  15. i know biden agreed. that wasn't what i meant...i just feel that marriage is a "right" and she does not support that particular right, yet she supports equal rights. clearly gay people aren't equal if denied that right. that's all. and i know that people do talk that way. i live in texas. i just don't buy it from her. who exactly does "joe six pack" refer to? sounds a bit derogatory to me. but that's just me. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  16. palin scares me. a lot. but i can admit that she did MUCH better than i thought she would. i hated that she so OBVIOUSLY evaded questions...especially in the beginning. i also found it odd that she went on about equal rights for everyone in her 'america's the best' closing remarks, when she said herself that everyone is not equal...at least when they want to be married. i would have liked to see her respond to biden's constant mention of mccain's voting record. i think it made her look worse by not addressing it at all, but then, what could she really say? the cutesy down home slang, especially "joe six pack", made me wanna barf but i have a feeling plenty of people found it to be endearing. hmm...i guess i'm done now Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  17. okay....i am very interested/concerned/worried about the current economic situation. however, i'm pretty uneducated about how it all works, and what the repercussions of the various possible solutions will be. is there a website/book/, or one of you who are obviously more knowledgeable about this than i am, out there who can sum up the basics of what's going on in words a non-economist can understand? i pick up some stuff on NPR and the like, but i just don't fully get it. help? Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  18. i'm not familiar with houston at all. any ideas about conditions near piney point village? fondren and 1093 more specifically? Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  19. my boyfriend's family has a house on the bay side of galveston (south where there is no sea wall). they've already lost the house due to 20ft waves. its flooded up to the 2nd story and the outside of the house is already being pulled off. they live in houston and are staying so i hope it doesn't get any worse for them. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  20. that's nearly as bad as her comments to her church that the war is a "task of god", and that drilling in alaska is "god's will". religious zealot, party of 1 please. how can someone like that run a country like the USA in times like these? makes me cringe. Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  21. geez...after your reaction to others asking the same favor of you, i'm surprised you had the nerve to post this! http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3197622;search_string=vote;#3197622 Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  22. is that angus young???? Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  23. so, from what i understand from rhondalea's post about military divorces, as long as he signs a waiver and gives up his right to appear in court or be served papers physically, the divorce can go on like any other. that makes sense...and he isn't arguing the divorce at all. thank you all so much. i'm forwarding all of your links on to her! Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  24. she's in dallas as well. i was under the impression that she could just file in person and pay the fees, as well as the court fees because she would have to be present, but i wasn't sure that was the case. i don't believe that him being in the service matters, as long as she's not trying to get any of his assets, pension, etc..which she's not. i'll send her that link. thank you! Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
  25. a friend of mine is divorcing her husband, who is deployed overseas right now. it is completely uncontested, and there is no property/assets to be divided, and no children. she is struggling financially, and i KNOW there is a way to file the papers yourself and avoid attorney's fees but i'm not sure of the specifics. anyone here done this, or any legal types know of how to go about it? i've seen websites offering "packages" but for some reason i think it's as easy as going to the courthouse and filing...am i right? thanks in advance! Oh Canada, merci pour la livraison!
