  1. Arch, pull,Arch more Regular procedures from there on in No, Not without incident
  2. Under extremely lightly loaded canopys, would'nt cell pressurisation be less ? Would this not make a canopy more susceptable to turbulence/canopy collapse? Certainly the prevailing wisdom is a more heavily loaded/zippy canopy can 'cut through' the turbulence Spare me the 'You shouldnt be jumping arguments' and play along with my thought experiment. No, Not without incident
  3. Nope, but I take it Scott uses it in his camp? Even more reason to plan one out for your canopy training No, Not without incident
  4. A group of us went up on a load to practice some canopy control techniques on a jump. The initial plan was to stall out our canopys with toggles, collapse it and reinflate (at 5000 ft) - non eliptical canopys mind you. Eliptcal people were supposed to rear riser stall - all seemed very tentative about even considering it. I stalled out my canopy, it folded up, fell backwards and was whipped around to my left -bit of a wild ride, got canopy re-inflated. Then practiced some flat turns and did a 1/2 brakes approach to flare. Now, It seemed most everyone one else on the jump was too nervous to stall out their canopy. When I was doing my student progression(static line), it was a required jump - and quite a hairy one. Should people be required to stall out their canopy early in there jump careers? Of course before they get a high performance eliptical. No, Not without incident
  5. Grumpy, Thanks for taking the time out to help. Very informative PtL No, Not without incident
  6. What are the +'s and -'s of taslan as a freefly jumpsuit ? ANyone got an all taslan jumpsuit ? No, Not without incident
  7. An understatement if I ever seen one Is this a new canopy - assuming it is. Is his packer a generally accepted knows what he/she is doing type of guy ? Rigger checked out his canopy for trim etc ? Instructor talked to him about body position. At least, he's getting his reserve drills down pat though, enough is enough, time to kill the problem No, Not without incident
  8. Either your friend is an idiot, shes pulling your leg or you got the wrong end of the stick. Bring her over to the S & TA and ask her to repeat her cut away intentions. Ya Right No, Not without incident
  9. If you are sitting beside the door, undo your seatbelt before you open the door. that way if you fell out - for whatever reason - you can deploy your chute and not take the plane down with you. We unfasten the seatbelt around 1000ft, lower if you are at the door, its a hot day, and the rest of the plane is screaming blue murder for the door to open. No, Not without incident
  10. Well, thats how I was taught to do it when I took up jumping in Ipswich Stuff it all in the pouch and hammer it flat until the handle appears at the opening. Gives a very snug fit AND no loose material flapping around the handle No, Not without incident
  11. A regular line check would have uncovered this loop thru ( and all line problems). I hope if you are packing any rig, you know of this type of check. Packing 101 I assume my packer just "Forgot" to do it in his packing frenzy No, Not without incident
  12. lie on your back on the ground, hands by your sides, palms up. now, keeping your legs straight, lift your legs up about 1 foot and hold it there. roll the shoulders Feel that strain(stomach), thats how it should feel in the air when maxing out your flat track. This is another area which is neglected these days along with proper plfs No, Not without incident
  13. Its been 10 posts and not one mentions a pull altitude, you have to go all the way back to froglady to find an altitude mentioned. But never mind, I consider this thread dead/trolled -shame Maybe I'll start a pull altitude take two thread No, Not without incident
  14. Just posting a relatively small event I had happen this weekend at the DZ. Having finished a jump and popped at 2500ft, I was collapsing the slider when I noticed an 'oddness' to the harness straps. my front riser strap was going to the rear of my rig, crossing the back riser strap, which was to the front - on both sides. Do a flare test - ok, turns not so good Considering options - its 2000, seems to flare ok - which argues for riding it in. However these forums are littered with 'someone had X happen, tried to ride it in and mangled themselves Y oh Y did they not use their perfectly good reserve'. I figured the damn packer had rotated the harness through the lines but I'll deal with him when I get down outta this jam. Flare tested it again and decided to ride it in but to be gentle with the turns. Brought it in in a long straight in approach, flared ok and stood it up. Then it was over to the packer, told him what happened and asked him to line check my canopy. Damn Dude, its got a twist in it - no shit, which was resolved by rotating my rig through the lines 1 complete revolution. Now I'm posting this in case someone else has this happen, they can benefit from my unexpected experience with a loop thru. No, Not without incident
  15. If their tracks are good their airspeeds will decrease unless they achieve glide ratios well over 1:1, which I doubt will happen without a wingsuit. A 80mph fall rate is achievable in a RW suit in a good flat track. You'd need a horizontal speed of 90mph to get an airspeed of 120. You were just at Cross Keys. Don't tell me you didn't see dozens of experienced jumpers in a delta instead of a good flat track at break-off. These are the guys who claim to speed up in a "track". Now I already asked nicely ... Please take this crap to another thread - If I wanted a discussion on tracking it would be in the thread header Ron/Kallend this means you Bill - you are a moderator - can you chuck this track debate elsewhere. No, Not without incident
  16. PLease do not high jack this tread If you wish to discuss the merits of opening in a track start a NEW tread on it. This thread is about todays ideas of pulling high and the possible danger it poses No, Not without incident
  17. DAmn, you take your eye of the thread for an evening and whoosh off it goes My main points were People who are pulling high >3500 do not believe they should go to the back of the jump run to avoid colliding with people opening at 2500ft. Their solution is to go out in front and tell people behind them they should open higher, give EXTRA time etc. Secondly there has been a trend for pull altitudes to go up. Yes people with snivelly pocket rockets have reasons to pull higher but the newer people are pulling at these altitudes with 200ft canopies like its a minimum safe opening altitude. I can see in another 2 years, people opening at 5000ft just to be on the safe side if a mal occurs. Listen you want to pull high, great just do it at the back of the jump run where others are pulling at the same altitude and DEFINITELY announce a pull height over 3500 - yes even the superstar 4 way camera man who dumps high
  18. Just a kind of Jarring experience I had Sunday. While waiting at the loading area, people were figuring out exit order and a 4 way RW group(from abroad I think) were asked their pull altitude - 2500 ft they answered (same as myself). They were immediately leapt upon by people complaining about why they were pulling so low? could they not pull at the 'Correct altitude of 3500'? Now I have been noticing a trend of pull altitudes floating upwards where jumpers pulling at 4000ft + dont believe they are pulling high and will jump in the middle of the run, without announceing or caring about it. So whats a high puller these days - I used to think pulling over 3000, get to the back of the line but moved that to 3500 with the current trends but 4000 ft - gimmie a break. I do argue with any group in front of me pulling at 4,000+ to either get behind me or preferably pull at 3500ft Now I know horizontal separation is king but helping with vertical separation is common practice i.e. high pullers get out last. So how high is a high puller / get thee behind me satan jumper ? No, Not without incident
  19. Agreed maybe touch on it and then consider well sometimes the unexpected happens(we all know it can) and add your 2 cents. My advice Fly the canopy all the way to the ground and if conditions are marginal or spooky , get ready to PLF PtL P.S. and I mean a full blooded PLF No, Not without incident
  20. I also have an original talon and do freeflying/sitflying with it. The easy mods I have are 1) Changed it to BOC 2) Elastic band on the reserve flap(rigger approved) as it will work free in sitflying. 3) Very little bridle exposure, goes from flap into BOC with only a tiny piece of bridle exposed I find the big problem with it is the shoulder straps are widely spaced which is not good for headdown. No, Not without incident
  21. Not entirely, notice the mirage shoulder straps almost mould around the back of the neck to get over the shoulders. This definitely helps keep it secure on the shoulders without having to pull the chest strap to a width of 4 inches I've been bombing along Headdown to catch/stay with fast guys and noticed the shoulder straps slide off my shoulders(sometimes to my elbows and I think ohh ohh premature deployment and I'll be spit outta here like a melon seed and had to cut out of the dive Here's an snippet from another current thread No, Not without incident
  22. one key point I'd like to know is the shoulder straps on the harness's, how far in are they on the voodoo vs the mirage G4 I want them to hug my neck at the shoulders i.e. sometimes on a head down jump I have to pull my arms and legs in for a spell, I dont want the straps slipping down my arms but staying firmly on my shoulders. No, Not without incident
  23. schweet ... The micron is outta the running. Yes I want the B12's. I did my first 50 jumps on static line/freefall rounds and they had the b12's. I liked their convenience even if it adds a little to the gear check. If the B12s are sans stainless than the stainless is out too. Thanks for the input. No, Not without incident
  24. So Its near crunch time, I'm near to taking the plunge for my brand new gear. Main discipline - freefly / 3D Container : Mirage G4 Vs Voodoo Vs Micron options : chest and hip rings, hackey, b-12 snaps, maybe the stainless option Main Canopy - Crossfire 2 139 vs cobalt 135 Reserve canopy - Smart 150 AAD - Cypress 2 My biggest angst at the mo is which container, they all seem fine but are there any definitive plus or minus points of these rigs compared to each other. I'm shading towards the Mirage just because .... dont know really I've also demo'ed both mains - both have slighly weird openings but fly great. So I'd like some specific comparison points on the above equipment as opposed to I love my X . At the end of the day any combo of the above will prolly feel great but I'd like to believe I did all the research I needed prior to forking ova da cash Speak up dudes No, Not without incident
  25. http://herbertholeman.com/para/units/plf.htm says the oppposite: "Move the body to form an arc as the PLF continues. Start the PLF when the balls of the feet touch the ground. Do not hesitate on the balls of the feet." Dont believe a single sketch has all the info there is to have about PLF's embedded in it. A PLF starts before the feet touch the ground.
