MEMORIES, FUNNY STORIES, PICS: Mariann Kramer
superstu replied to arlo's topic in Blue Skies - In Memory Of
i was lucky enough to be in the same group as Mariann this past weekend during the PST competition. And even though i only new her this year it was very apparient that she embodied the true spirit of what skydiving is about: freedom, family, and friends. We did 3 competition loads before this one and this was the last one of the day. On every load Mariann was a blast to be around; joking, talking trash , watching the other exhibition and compeition jumps going on. she was just great to be around and i feel honored to spend the small amount of time i was able to with her. thanks for the memories. i've had a canopy stay in the "cacoon" shape for 2000' doing absolutely shit. even with me yanking on the risers like a mad man it wouldn't come out of it's shape. it also never spun up. it was a canopy with probably 2000+ jumps, with an RDS, and the tail rolled very tight. it didn't look like the RDS was restricting the opening at all either, so i don't know what caused that one. but it was a fun reserve ride. there were a few "up and comers" last year at the CPC championships that were sponsored. i'm not sure who and how much support they were getting though. i read a really good autobiography about Michael Jordon a little while ago (yes i can read). and in there he talked about how basketball players now are getting/expecting shoe deals and commercials before they've actually earned it because the companies all want the newest and best players to be associated with their company. but when that newest and best player doesn't live up to the hype or expectations then the companies get all bent out of shape about it cause they just lost a billion dollars or what ever. same kind of thing with skydiving companies, when they sponsor someone they are investing in that person, and when that person doesn't deliver they lose money. that might be why us "up and comers" (me included) don't get as much support as the more experienced guys, because we haven't proved to be in it for the long haul. then other people just don't want to be sponsored because that more pressure and responsibility they don't want. just my thoughts on the subject. yeah, that wasn't a jump plane and the Farrington's don't own it. no one at the DZ saw it cause it was at the other end of the airport and the airport is huge. but the pilot forgot to put the gear down and slid it in. no one was hurt and there appeared to be very little strucctural damage. the engine on the other hand i heard has about $50k in repair Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down

by the way nick, you're assuming that if you start from braked flight you WILL get to a higher airspeed, but nothing actually says you'll get to that point. if you start your turn too early then really you haven't gained any more speed, or maybe you've even started your turn from a slower speed which might be considered counter productive. you just never know starting in brakes. starting in full-flight however, you know you'll be starting from a high speed, maybe not the highest, but still high. more food for thought... ok how about this... in colorado and in florida, both Ian and I were going pretty much the exact same distance in either practice runs or in competition runs. Now Ian starts in deep brakes like the majority of people and i start in full-flight. Ian flies an HMA lined velo and i fly a JVX, ian has a 90 and i have an 87. so two very similar wings, going very similar distances, but starting from very different flight modes. and just for the record i would say that an HMA lined velocity is the closest wing in comparison to a JVX. i don't think there is a stock parchute out there today that i could fly further or faster with then a JVX.
