navigation amoung clouds?

Recommended Posts

Gabor,

Did you see the post in the camera forum by the guy who was using a lcd monitor to sight a zoomed in video camera so he could film race action from a powered paraglider?

It would be pretty slick if you could find a GPS until with a video output that you could use to transmit your ground track to a heads up display. :P

Has anyone some idea or cool gadget for providing some aid for flying among clouds?

I know the trivial hint: don't fly.

Do you have anything else?

A cellphone and a friend who is willing to pick you up?

You arent a flyer. Ground track is useless in the sky.:P

???!! :|

So what sort of aides are you looking for then for "navigation amoung clouds"?

Ground refrence works just fine for spotting the aircraft when have an idea of the uppers and a brain. Considering that I land my ass on the ground at the end of every jump I find it nice to know where I am relative to my intended landing zone.

Maybe we can take the gauge cluster out of an old 182 and bolt it to the front of a protec for you. :D

I bet your average skydiver wouldn't want to foot the bill for that setup. :D

When you break through even a light haze you may loose your only reference, the sun, than try to find the right hole in between.

It can be handy if you only see forest and a big lake under you.

Welcome to Finland!

I can see it now ...

Friend: "Where are you so I can pick you up?"

You: "By the big tree."

Friend: "Which big tree?"

You: "The one by the big lake."

Friend: "This may take a while."

I guess a cellphone and a friend might not be that helpful. :D

Ok. Maybe you can elaborate on your question then, because I am actually interested. Are you looking for a better way to stay oriented with the cloud itself?

Can it be some simple device using VOR or NDB?

But still dont want to fly IFR with wing suit. B|

No, it's a helmet mounted GPS guidance system with a HUD display screen. In the picture I have flipped the HUD screen up out of the way. Day, night, clouds, it doesn't matter, it will tell you how to go to the desired DZ.

Is your chest strap wrapped around your reserve handle?! :o

No, it's just let all the way out and the sewn end portion is in front of the handle in the picture. If it had been wrapped around the reserve handle 1. the JM would have caught it during inspection and 2. it would have more than likely deployed my reserve or pulled the handle out of the pocket when I loosened the chest strap if it had been routed through the reserve handle.
