Water Landing - any experience ?

Recommended Posts

Hi to all,
had anyone any experience of water landing with a WS ?
how long does it take to get full of water ?
can you swim a bit ?
can you wait for the recovery boat during a show ?

or simply we have to fly away from water.

I''m asking 'cause i've got an invitation to a show where we're supposed to land on water.

Yes .... avoid at all costs. Especially if it is moving or running water.(Like a moving river or creek)
Once I landed next to a running river, and had my canopy fall over into the river. It floated for about 5 seconds, until the p.c. filled with water and took the canopy donwn with it. I got dragged in in my WS almost instantly, I fought it or about thirty seconds, until I chopper th main. It was incredible how quickly my suit was full of water and sicking.
I would say H20 is a big NO NO.

I wouldn't do it intentionally.

I've landed a wingsuit in water twice. Once I had flotation, and once I didn't. It wasn't exactly a near death experience, but I'm actually a very strong swimmer (I was a competitive swimmer in college, and taught swimming and worked as a lifeguard for about 8 years putting myself through school). With the flotation, I pretty much just hung on and waited for the pick up boat. Without the flotation, I was able to tread water fairly well with the wings cut away, but I doubt there would have been any way I could deal with both the wingsuit and the canopy without a good pickup boat.

Bottom line? Don't do it on purpose.

Think of the other issues appart from drowning
Wet wing suit
Wet rig, reserve repack
AAD's getting wet?
Will the wuffo's on the ground actually appreciate the wingsuit part of the jump, why risk it if you can do a ordinary jump into water

actually yes they're, i'm going to jump with smoke, no problem for the repack, sponsor will pay for that cost.

I'm looking for a small self inflatable device, i've saw something big as a Cypress I gadget bag when not inflated; I can hold it under the suit and keep in my hand once on the water; anyway the rescue boat will be on the way.

On a commercial airlines they have those vest with a CO2 cylinder that inflates the vest, it also has a manual blow up. Be sure to loosen your cest strap if you use the CO2 or you may break a few ribs.
