Very true on the batteries.....

Mine started giving me junk in the cold (well, L.A. cold) mornings. I thought there was moisture in it or something...because it would work eventually when we got up a few thousand feet.

Anyways, I put a new duracell in it and it was back to normal.

I use the energizer photo lithium batteries in mine and have never had an issue. They also last a really really long time and arn't affected by cold like other batteries.

(these are the same AA batteries I use in my digital camera when snowboarding)

Interesting... how was this information found?

Short answer: info from the manufacturer.

Long answer:
About a year ago, my Digitude showed erratic readings: rapid changes in indicated altitude, display blanking, stuff like that. I sent it back to the manufacturer. He sent it back with a note saying it chambered okay -- the problem was shape of the contacts on the Energizer I'd installed, and I should switch back to a Duracell. I did, and haven't had a problem since.
