Newbie with a question

Hey all,

Im new to skydiving just got my A the other day. I am thinking about downsizing my Canopy. Since My exit weight is 200 -205 i was looking at mabey getting a 210 as my first rig. My question what would be the advantages and disadvantegs of a 7 cell vs a 9 cell? and mabey if i could get any recomendations on what type of canopy to look at.

well, when I was at that jump number my instructors told me that it didn't really matter if I went for a 7 or 9 cell Zero P as long as my wing laoding was under 1:1. That is what you need to make sure too. Don't go over 1:1 until you have about 150 to 200 jumps. As for 7 or 9 cells, well, the skills that you need to develop as a new jumper can be adequately developed on both. Both have pluses and minuses about them. I'd say go for the right wing laoding and the rest doesn't matter at this point.

As for what canopy to buy, and what size, you can do a search for that as well. But most importantly,
*ask your own instructors*.

start off with a 7 cell Triathlon, do a hundred jumps, then by that time you'll have a better handle on what you want, because you can demo during that time.

7-cells tend to be "zoomier" than equivalent square footage 9-cells. Mostly that is related to the aspect ratio, which is the ratio of the width to the chord (front to back measurement).

I think that a Spectre 210 (7-cell) would be perfect for you. I believe them to be significantly superior to Triathlons of equivalent size. Also worth more in resale.

I am sure that you will have many recommendations, but of course mine is the best. Also, note that I don't know you, your skill level, or anything else....

Your move from 288 to 260 at that exit weight is a safe on IMHO. My recommendation is that you get REALLLY GOOD at flying the canopy size you're working on before you go smaller. There are lots of great resources out there. Try [url "http://www.performancedesigns.com/education.asp"]THIS[url]

From what I understand, 9 cell canopies tend to give a bit more forward speed than 7 cells. that is, 7 cells "sink" a bit more.

The PD Spectre is a great 7 cell, if you want to go that direction. It's slightly elliptical shape gives you a bit more response in the steering.

I think your choice to stay with a big canopy is a good, responsible one.

I asked the same question when I was trying to decide which canopy to get. 9 or 7 cell. I have about a 220 pound exit weight. I bought a triathlon 210. It is an awesome canopy.! If you are used to those big cloud types(280sf or close to that) The tri will then amaze you. It flies very nice and won't intimidate you. 9 cells they say have a better glide but as far as I'm concerned it flies just as nice as the other 9 cells for your exprience level. Plus, if you hold in deep brakes it just sinks straight down! Which is a good thing if you happen to land off the dz and landing area is smaller! Just my opinion, but I don't think you would be dissapointed in a tri!
