Downsizing canopies

Recommended Posts

Containers that have the closing loop attach to the bottom of the container (like the Javelin) tend to allow you more room to downsize. If the closing loop attaches on the top of the inside of the container it still can usually allow for some downsizing. If the closing loop is on the bottom flap you are going to have very little room do downsize. this isn't the whole story but should give you an idea.

If you're buying a container and know yuo will want to downsize in the future get a container one size smaller than your current main. Your current main will fit in it. And then you can downsize with no problems, and later downsize again if you want all on the same container. But generally speaking I agree with the others in that most containers can take the next size up and down without problems.

Yes, most containers will gracefully fit one size larger or smaller than planned. If you want more variation than that, go for a Javelin-style main loop anchored in the pack tray. Hint, if your rig does not already have a Javelin-style loop anchor, some Master riggers will retrofit that style, though you may have to wait until your next repack.
If you want to install a main significantly smaller, then consider asking your local master rigger to sew up a pillow to bulk-out your main container.

Good idea if you're a good packer or have non-whiney paid packers at your dz. Recipe for frustration if you don't have a lot of packing experience and you have a crispy new zp main.

Better for a first rig to buy a container sized for the main you have/plan to buy, then you can easily put a smaller one in when you're ready to downsize.

IN addition to the other things mentioned, you will also need to consider canopy type... for instance a 7 cell packs smaller than a 9 cell, a x-braced packs like one size larger typically, an airlocked canopy will pack bigger also. so for instance if you are jumping a 170 spectre, a 150 9 cell of some variety may fit into that container without any worry (worry as in loop slack, etc) at all.
