sigma tandem rig question

Recommended Posts

Excess text edited from the subject line by slotperfect and pasted here:

if drogue is out before exit can it not pull the curved safety pin out and cause premature container opening whilst in aircraft or outside aircraft on exit ?

If the drogue escapes the pair before exit and catches air and the TI is unable to pull it back in , can it not pull the curved locking pin (safety pin feature of the sigma tandem rig) out of the eyed hole of the main container closing loop pin ?

In this event , will it not be possible to have a premature container opening between the time the pair is struggling to get to the door to follow the drogue or subsequently after exit if the bridle gets entangled with the pair due to unstable body position on exit?

Would it not be possible to get the bridle snagged somewhere in the aircraft once this curved pin is out of its location?

First of all, please don't put so much text in your subject lines; save the details of the question for the body of the post - thanks! B|

To answer your question, if the drogue comes out prematurely in the aircraft it is possible for it to pull the curved safety pin, BUT - it won't prematurely open the main continer until one of the drogue release handles are pulled.

If the drogue gets out of the aircraft before the pair, the pair is soon to follow. Even at slow Cessna airspeeds pulling a inflated 4.5 ft drogue back inside an aircraft is a near impossibility.

Minding your handles, including your drogue, at all times is the best insurance against a premature deployment of anything in the aircraft.

A tandem is not just another skydive. :|

Like John said, you are not going to pull an inflated drogue back into an airplane.....period. Also like John said, no, the simple act of having your drogue out prior to exit does not mean that you are anymore likely to have a premature deployment. The pin that closes your container is going to remain in place until you pull either of the drogue release handles.

The drogue release handle can get snagged during this time between the drogue escaping the pair and flying out and trailing besides the aircraft's fuselage with lots of pressure and the time the pair finally exits out of the airplane.

C-182: fuel selector switch, seatbelts, static line attachment points, mechanical flap adjustment levers, are some examples that can cause it to snag.

If a TI manages to let the drogue out of the door, then snags a drogue release handle, 1) they really screwed up, and 2) yes, the main will deploy, but unless the drogue snagged the tail, it should deploy cleanly.

It isn't hard to prevent the drogue from leaving the pouch early, don't let it happen, same as a main PC on a sport rig.

The Sigma is a very reliable, well designed and bult tandem rig. A TI has to work very hard to screw it up, but it can be done.

We answered your question as you asked it. If you add a drogue release handle getting snagged, then yets indeed the main container will come open.
