howardwhite 5 #1 September 11, 2007 This is a truly obscure airplane, but if you know where the picture came from, you'll be able to identify not only it but the people in the picture. (I have better pictures of the plane,....for later.) HW

tri160 1 #6 September 11, 2007 You are right Howard that one is obscure! I do believe that it is a 1929 American Eagle biplane. As for the jumper or when and where the picture was taken I have no clue. Mike

Bsquared 0 #9 September 12, 2007 Parks P-2A Speedster or possibly Detroiter with a Wright J-5 Whirlwind motor. Is the guy holding the prop Richard Bach (Illusions, Nothing by Chance) and the jumper Stu McSomething-or-other who traveled around the country with him that summer doing exhibitions. Bingo!!The picture is in fact from "Nothing by Chance," Richard Bach's 1969 book about barnstorming around the midwest. (it was made into a movie which apparently was never widely distributed.) That is Bach holding the prop. The jumper is Stuart MacPherson, then a 19-year-old college student who was part of the barnstorming tour. MacPherson is now a barnstormer himself (as well as a dentist.) The plane is a Detroit Parks P2A (N499H), one of two still registered in the US (unretouched picture attached). It has a Wright 540 engine. The book is kind of fun, sort of a low-key "Gypsy Moths." Bach made some jumps in the mid-70s. I met him at Mac McCraw's Tampa Bay Parachute Ranch. If memory serves, he had a DeHavilland Dove, but as far as I know, never let anyone jump out of it. HW
