slotperfect 7 #1 June 26, 2004 My best friend from my early days in the Army emailed me yesterday, and included the attached picture. I got a HUGE kick out of it. The School: Green Beret Sport Parachute Club The Date: 16 March 1985 The Place: Holland Drop Zone, Fort Bragg, North Carolina The Gear: MC1-1B, T-10 Reserve (not yet attached) The Garb: Bell motorcycle helmet, ugly yellow double-zipper cotton jumpsuit The Jumps: 2 static line DRCPs from 3500 FT The Aircraft: UH-1H Helicopter The Instructors: Bob Herron (D9393) and James Judkins (D6062) I was 20 years old, new to the Army & to Fort Bragg. I was making my 4th & 5th sport jump in static line progression, adding to my already accumulated 11 military static line jumps. The car in the foreground belongs to my pal who sent me the picture. It's a 1978 Mercury Cougar with an 8-track player. He and I started our sport training together. The white lanyard hanging off the right riser was an early version of the RSL, called a Stevens Lanyard. It simply attached to the reserve ripcord handle with a french link, and the excess was stowed safely away (how I don't remember). If you cut away (shot and a half Capewells), the right main riser pulled the reserve ripcord on its way out. The reserve canopy was a military 24 Ft flat circular, modified with a 4-line release to make it "steerable." 20 years later, the jumpsuit is a few sizes larger, and the look not quite so youthful, but believe it or not, the hair remains exactly the same! LouDiamond 1 #4 June 27, 2004 DUDE! I am liking those glasses and the hockey helmet. You look like one of the Hansen twins The only thing different in the picture is you don't have that rat tail hanging over your shoulder"It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
slotperfect 7 #5 June 27, 2004 Wasn't it "BruiseAir?" The deuce-and-a-half in the background spices it up a bit, don't you think? BTW - is that a jumpsuit or a cape? Arrive Safely John
skydiver30960 0 #6 June 28, 2004 Twenty years from now: (flashback sequence...) Hey guys, check out this pic I found on an old 200 gig harddrive I found in the back of the closet: The date: June 2004 The rig: Javelin The main: Crossfire 2 The reserve: PD 176 The AAD: Cypres WOW, do you all remember when we used to feel safe jumping that stuff? Damn, what were we thinking? Look at all that tie dye! Apparently not much more fashion sense than common sense back then... usedtajump 1 #7 June 28, 2004 Wow, I had Classiflyer similar to that. Didn't you just love the plastic reserve ripcord, the cutaway handle that was mounted so high you could barely see it and what was that frap wrap cut away release system called? The older I get the less I care who I piss off.
BlueSBDeath 2 #8 June 28, 2004 I don't recall the name of the release system. I never had to use it, thank God!!!! I think I might have been mistaken about the main, I think it was a GQ Unit (200sq feet). Attached is my 1st rig, Me in it and me in the Peas with the main!!! wmw999 2,343 #9 June 28, 2004 Man I love being old sometimes. Those look like R3's for the release, and the rig like a much-"loved" Piglet, the system that invented the need for the Jesus rope. usedtajump 1 #13 June 28, 2004 OMG!!! I had a Dynasoar jump suit that looked exactly like that. I actually had to do a cut away on my Classiflyer and the release system worked great, uh....after I finally found the cutaway handle. The older I get the less I care who I piss off. wmw999 2,343 #16 June 28, 2004 QuoteWith a dangerous plastic rip-cord !!! Can you believe that a plastic rip-cord was ever built Hey! Don't knock plastic ripcords. Especially don't knock them with a hammer when it's cold out Actually, the darker ones (looked tan instead of white) were quite cold-resistant. But there's nothing wrong with good old metal, is there. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. usedtajump 1 #17 June 28, 2004 Wendy, I think the darker ripcords were refered to as "fiberglass" ripcords as opposed to actual, no shit, plastic ripcords. "Fiberglass" seemed to hold up better than plastic while being stored year round in the trunk of a car.The older I get the less I care who I piss off. slotperfect 7 #20 June 29, 2004 QuoteI loved all that F-111, it was the Hot Ticket, back when that was cool!!! I remember when I got my "hot" new 9-cell Raider. 220 sq ft 9-cell F-111, and awesome! It opened in a stall a third of the time, but flew like crazy with my big ass under it. I used to watch the GK RW Team swoop the heck out of them.Arrive Safely John

I've got about 10 jumps under a Raider 220...it flew like crazy too. When I flared my forward movement stopped but I think it actually sped up downwards. Not a stall, just a canopy that is too old. It was a straight up hard-core PLF that saved my legs.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
