Very Bad Spot!

Talk about landing out. Anyone hear about this or have more info? Seems a bit embarrassing!

Paratroopers Land At Prison

CANON CITY, Colo. — A unit of 25 military paratroopers landed inside the perimeter of a state prison, but not to quell a riot or attempt some movie-script breakout. They just goofed.

The paratroopers, armed with exercise rifles that shoot rubber bullets, landed in a cornfield outside the Fremont Correctional Institute early Thursday, Colorado Department of Corrections spokeswoman Katherine Sanguinetti said.

Guards escorted them off the grounds with no violence, she told the Rocky Mountain News.

Miss Sanguinetti said she did not know which military unit was involved. She said an investigation is under way but it appears guards handled the inadvertent intrusion correctly.

The newspaper said the Army and Air Force denied knowledge of the episode. The Colorado National Guard did not return a call seeking comment.

It was definitely a unit out of Fort Carson. I don't know of any airborne units there. 10th SFG is there, but I wouldn't think that they'd be static line jumping (would they?). Other than that, maybe 4th ID has some Pathfinder units as tenants there?

Well, some DZs, like Eloy, if you land out, you land in the desert. Some you land in the trees.

Some DZ, like Canon City, if you land out, you land in a prison.

Last time I drove thru the city, all the business establishments and home builders had signs in the windows, "Discounts for Department of Corrections Employees".

Seriously, though.... The "outs" near the airport (Freemont County Airport) are like Eloy, big open fields. But if this unit was practicing and not landing near the airport, landing in a prison would not be difficult by accident. On the way up and jump run, you see all these buildings that look like high schools that are really just different jails. Some are underground and you don't see at all, except for the admin buildings.

To give you an idea, 16% of the residents of the county are inmates - and the SuperMax prison is where all the "big boys" go to stay...

How do you know? Yes Fort Carson is next door, but if you have "definite" in your post, do you have some proof?

GQJumper used to be out of Carson and jumped military down there. I remember him saying that visitors came often.

They did static line and HALO and HAHO jumps.

Okay, it could be and likely is from Fort Carson. It might also be some weird exercise from the Air Force Academy. Maybe Pinon Canyon :S.

Even if there was a visiting unit to do jump operations in the area, and they staged out of Fort Carson, then my initial statement would still be correct. I was more curious about what unit that might have been doing it.

I have seen JM look back inside the aircraft after putting students out, lean back saying "S**t, S**t, I put them out at the WRONG end of the DZ!!!"

Three SL students landed out, JM fetched them and then bought BEER :)

Jean, NV is the same way. If you have an 'oops' spot, you -could- land in the prison next door. If you have a bad spot from either Brown's Field or Otay, you could land in Mexico! :o (try getting back from -that- spot!).

I "accidentally" spotted a load of jumpers from another dz over the Jean prison. As they were going out I told em to open high.:)That was a onetime only thing though as there was a desert race going on at our regular landing area and they allowed us to jump on the airport. Normally we landed 4 miles southwest of the airport.

For anyone worrying that I did something unsafe, the prison is only a quarter mile from the airport and that just happened to be upwind that day.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Jean prison a women's facility? If so, perhaps some of the men would -like- to have a bad spot over it. ;)

At the time I mentioned it was a mens medium security facility.
As it is now its a womens facility and it also has a fire fighting crew of inmates housed there.

Our DZ is next door to a prison. Worse; all our students wear orange overalls while on progression! It's the dz joke: "Don't land in the prison or you will never get out!"

I landed in the prison once on a very bad spot. But not the compound where the prisoners are, just in the grounds.
Only skydivers know why the birds sing; they don't have to pack a parachute!
