In Canada the carbon tax is made "revenue neutral" by being offset by refundable tax credits. This will result in a massive transfer of wealth from anyone living in a place where they need to drive and heat a detached home to people living in city apartments and using transit.

Of course the price of that detached home has been the single biggest wealth creator in Canada.

But that does nothing to increase income. You can't mortgage your house to pay for your gasoline. Well, you could I suppose, but not in a sustainable way. But the real point is that money will flow from suburban/rural areas to inner cities. And that is the intention.

You can certainly rent out a room for more and more money as real estate prices climb.

I think the intention is to get those suburban livers to make their homes and their cars more carbon neutral.  And by instituting a financial penalty for not doing so, it will happen far more quickly.

Wealth most certainly helps to start generating income.

For whom would it be easier to start generating income by being an Owner/Operator trucker?

  • John who has no wealth and no income.
  • Jack who has $500,000 of equity in his house and no income.

Jill, who is a company driver, knows better than to buy a truck, and invests in broad based EFTs tax sheltered in her TFSA.
