ACA and US health insurance reform

Recommended Posts

Deserves a thread of it's own. Signals and feelers are now being sent out by the GOP. It's reported that Ryan says this.

The House speaker also said he is on board with Trump's call to keep some elements of President Barack Obama's signature health care law.
But he won't commit to mandating insurance coverage of birth control for women at no cost.

I will note that coverage of birth control is really more of a culture wars battle than a healthcare battle. Even socialized medicine in Canada does not pay for routine birth control products. Maybe outrage over this was part of the over reach people were feeling about the ACA. People need to choose their battles a lot more carefully than this.

Remember, you can't always get what you want. But you might find you get what you need. Something is going to happen. Will the 18 million or so now end up with no coverage?
Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

Colorado seems to have proven that providing free, long term birth control actually saves money, reduces teen pregnancy, and drastically reduces abortion. Not sure why the GOP would object to a win-win-win scenario.

I think largely because they will decide based on ideology rather than common or economic sense....

The anti-women movement is very very deep on the right. pro-life includes defeating access to abortion and birth control. It does not include education or access to services. It does not include paying for anything.

Even if it means more poverty for women and children.

Yes, I firmly believe they will ABSOLUTELY vote for that on the belief that people should 'just make better decisions'. The results for an entire generation or two of women could be catastrophic by any modern standard.

And once the damage is done, it could take two generations or more to undo it with an new administration, post-Trump.
