The blackmail tactic is the GOP's; they hold the keys to their own jail cell. It is they who painted themselves into the corner; it is they who will have to get themselves out. Or, not. labrys 0 #29 October 10, 2013 QuoteBeing a military spouse, of twenty + years. I can understand the angst, but when did that kind of money start getting thrown around? I'm of the same mind. Someone else mentioned it already. I think that this particularly optimistic piece of propaganda comes from someone who is confusing the old SGLI insurance with military benefits. The government does *not* lay out a million dollars for every 10 fatalities to cover air fare and expenses. Would be nice in theory, but it isn't true. I've been family and friends with veterans from WWI until now and a veteran of the Gulf War myself and I've never heard of or seen this 100,000 dollar government benefit.Owned by Remi #? RonD1120 59 #30 October 10, 2013 Latest from DoD: > IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 710-13 October 09, 2013 Statement by Secretary Hagel on Death Gratuities Today I am pleased to announce that the Department of Defense is entering into an agreement with the Fisher House Foundation that will allow the federal government to provide the family members of fallen service members with the full set of benefits they have been promised, including a $100,000 death gratuity payment. I am offended, outraged, and embarrassed that the government shutdown had prevented the Department of Defense from fulfilling this most sacred responsibility in a timely manner. In the days before the shutdown, we warned Congress and the American people that DoD would not have the legal authority to make these payments during a lapse in appropriations. In the days after the shutdown, Departmental lawyers and budget officials pursued every tool and option at our disposal in an effort to provide these benefits. Even under the Pay Our Military Act, we found that we lacked the necessary authority to make payments to the families directly. In the last 24 hours, however, the Department of Defense was approached by the Fisher House Foundation, which had generously offered to make payments to these families from its own funds. In consultation with the Office of Management and Budget, DoD has determined that we can enter into a contract with the Fisher House Foundation to provide these benefits. The Fisher House Foundation will provide the families of the fallen with the benefits they so richly deserve. After the shutdown ends, DoD will reimburse the Fisher House for the costs it has incurred. The Department has no higher priority than taking care of our service members and their families. Our men and women in uniform must know that the Department will always fulfill its responsibilities to them and to their families. Congress has responsibilities as well, and it has abdicated them. Along with the rest of the Department's leaders, I will continue to work every day to address the very real impact that the government shutdown is having on our people, and I once again call on Congress to fulfill its basic responsibilities and restore funding for the federal government.<Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them.

I can say this: If Obama took his presidency more seriously, like ALL of hi predecessors have, perhaps I would have more confidence in him. I still believe that he is in campaign mode, I don't know why he is, I cant see what it gains him, unless that is all he really knows. Darius11 12 #34 October 10, 2013 First i am sorry for the loss. Now here is what i think. I do not agree with our foreign policy, I think we send our young men/woman to die so rich white men can get richer. There is enough proof of the real motivation that started the war to understand it was not to save American lives or our way of life. We were not under threat of speaking Iraqi or Afghani. Can we agree, We were not under threat of speaking Iraqi or Afghani? So the ultimate betrayal was done when our troops were sent in to begin with. As for the money I am confused. I remember making a poll long ago about killing for money, I got an unbelievable amount of flack for that in PMs on the poll etc etc. So I assume no one is in the military for the money from those conversations, its all about serving your country, and honor. If that’s the case I don’t see 100K being an issue, and a 100K is a lot more then you will need for tickets and a week’s worth of hotel food. Yes I understand a life is priceless, but I am just saying the math doesn't make sense. Also don’t we give $2500.00 to the people the civilians we kill? 100k to 2.5k ? One volunteered one was sitting at home minding his/her own business in their own land. Hmmmmmmmmmmm I don’t get the hypocrisy, if you’re doing it to serve your country and keep your family safe go head if that’s what you belive, if you’re doing it for the money then maybe you should find a better way to make money, one that doesn’t involve going to foreign lands where you are hated and shot at. I understand solders do their job they don’t question orders, so I do not blame them for the wars, however I have lived through a war and people get fucked up in wars, the most horrifying shit happens in a war zone. If you voluntary put yourself in such a position whose fault is that? I think that's why they try to get them young. No one would go to war if they knew what it was like unless they had no other choice, but that's another thread. Now remember no one was coming on our land, they hadn’t taken over California and we had to fight to liberate anyone. This is an unnecessary war fought by a volunteer army, and Mercenaries like blackwater or whatever the fuck it’s called now. I am sorry for their loss, as I am sorry for ANY unnecessary death regardless of the color of their skin or nationality. However the nationalistic propaganda “they died for my freedom” “they died keeping you safe” is Bull shit. This wasn't WWII It’s sad yes it’s very sad for many reasons, and yes the government (all of them reps, or dems,) do suck.I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain
