Self-Reported Gun Ownership in U.S. Is Highest Since 1993

"Forty-seven percent of American adults currently report that they have a gun in their home or elsewhere on their property. This is up from 41% a year ago and is the highest Gallup has recorded since 1993... Democrats' self-reported gun ownership spiked to 40% this year... The percentage of women who report household gun ownership is also at a new high, now registering 43%...

"A clear societal change took place regarding gun ownership in the early 1990s, when the percentage of Americans saying there was a gun in their home or on their property dropped from the low to mid-50s into the low to mid-40s and remained at that level for the next 15 years. Whether this reflected a true decline in gun ownership or a cultural shift in Americans' willingness to say they had guns is unclear. However, the new data suggest that attitudes may again be changing. At 47%, reported gun ownership is the highest it has been in nearly two decades -- a finding that may be related to Americans' dampened support for gun-control laws..."

I'm all for guns and everything, but we get it already.. do you really need to post every pro-gun statistic you can find on the internet here? Maybe consolidate a little bit? :)

You don't seem to have the same disdain for all the athiests and the religious threads they start.

It's very seldom you see Jay, Ron, Max, myself or any other person of faith start a religios thread...we don't need to...

...then they complain we shove our beliefs down their throat.:D

If the anti-gunnies receive only occassional information that their views are incorrect, it is too easy for them to dismiss the information as a fluke and just ignore it. But a steady stream of such facts and truths is what finally convinces the anti-gun folks that they're wrong. They have to be hit from all angles, all the time, until every shred of anti-gun hope they have is shattered with the actual truth. And that's reflected in the other Gallup poll showing the lowest level of support ever for gun control laws. Some of the most liberal people in this forum have changed their tunes on this issue based upon their exposure to this kind of information, that they would not have otherwise encountered.

reading the full article, the breakdowns feel very fuzzy, hard to see it adding up to 47%, but definitely interesting to look at the trend lines.

the most striking was that the Democrat leaners' answer of yes increased 33% in the past two years (30->40%). Is this a reflection of the attack on gun bans in DC, Il, and NY, or as they throw out as a possible, an increased willingness to say yes?

That's the mystery. Did they own guns all along but were afraid to admit it? Or have they just recently gone out and acquired a gun?

Either way, it shows that gun ownership is mainstream, most everyone is doing it, and it's nothing to be ashamed of.

With gun-control efforts in Congress stymied, and the Supreme Court affirming 2nd Amendment rights, there's no reason right now to hide gun ownership from pollsters.
