What is rich

Recommended Posts

Quote

Most people seem to think anyone making noticably more than them is rich:S.

I would probably rate it as a factor times the average income for your city.

Agreed. It is highly subjective, very dependent on the local cost of living, and largely relative to what a person feels (so mostly a measure of emotion).

If a person wants to slot people, then do it on data such as income or assets. Slotting people based on emotional labels such as rich, poor, comfortable, well off, happy, etc is silly. All you're really doing is tallying how they feel about themselves.

As an aside, best advice I ever got on displaying your assets is to not drive a car more expensive than can be afforded by the average highway patrol officer.

2 standard deviations above the mean would be a reasonable definition.

That would be a reasonable definition for a mathematical question. The original posters' question falls more into the emotional opinion of what is rich.

Quantitative Vs Qualitative, I like it! However, I think a mixed method approach might best address the question.

Mathematics works for everyone. We all have different emotions. There is no answer if you rely on emotion.

We all have different emotions. We all have different opinions, and that's what the original poster asked for. Of course there is an answer, but you won't find it in a university classroom.

You are more likely to find it there than in an emotional response.

the prof has a good answer. best one so far. distributions are used to clearly define what is defined as "out of the ordinary" in a

measurable
repeatable

way

anything else is just moronic feelings on a subject that should be direct - as soon as 'feelings' start to play, that's when the government starts abusing the money they take

or we can digress on fluffy and pointless discussion that should be in bonfire on how "wealth" is defined by how many rigs you own and the quality of the artistic fluffiness of the clouds you'd fall by on warm late spring day with your best girl and a cold beer and a warm feeling toward your fellow man when trumpets blare and you surf on a wet landing area to the smiles of spectators on the way to a family reunion with your blah, blah, blah

I'm mostly responding to a post that disregards one man's answer and then goes on to say - "hey, we need to respect everyone's viewpoint here" the disconnect is really cute. so I mock and tease

The "original poster originally asked" for a quantified set of dollars in the form of a table to vote on.....the prof has that nailed as he can look up the 2 sigma line, and then check off the box. His "opinion" is just as good as any other and has an extra benefit of adding structure to the debate rather than the flush of subjective self congratulation with no option for a common ground.

but two standard deviations above the mean is going to translate to basic middle class, not rich.

Use of deciles or quintiles is likely to be more usable in this context.

not in most of them -

try that approach in a political theory class and see how much of that is actually fact.
