nanook 1 #1 May 18, 2010 Unexpected, really. In 07' I overclaimed income and I amended the return. IRS sent me notice that they owed me $3069. But when I got the check, I got 3378.77. On the bottom of the check they anotated the fact that they had paid me interest. Till today, I always thought this was a one-way street. They did that to me as well...and paid me interest on money they held up while I had to sort a bunch of stock and stock options sales I made. At the end of last year they sent me a Form 1099-INT so I could claim it as taxable income ... I made very SURE to add that on this years taxes. Some how I managed to reduce a digit in the withholding box of a W2 form I was transcribing and pay more than I should have by check. Months later I got a letter from the IRS indicating that they'd reviewed my tax return, found problems, and that a check with interest was included. This year I reported interest income with the IRS as a payer.
