Reagan on the Fifty Dollar Bill . . .

Recommended Posts

First the neocon fanboys wanted Ronald Reagan on Mount Rushmore (gawd!) and now they are pushing for him to be placed on the fifty dollar note.

I purposely said "neocon" rather than republican because you true republicans totally had your party hijacked by the right wing extremists and left what traditional republicans that existed pandering to an extremist right wing base. My Julia is a true old school republican (small government, strong defense, etc.) and our dinner conversations are probably a lot like what goes on in James Carville and Mary Matalin's house, LOL.

But the obvious irony of putting Reagan on the fifty is too plain. And saying it's the recent past crop of republicans who ran up the national debt is undisputed. It's so appropriate their color is red. It stands for red ink . . .

Just look at the attached chart. Reagan ballooned the debt to 1.70 trillion dollars. Bush One raised it another 1.40 trillion and Bush Zero raised it a staggering 4 trillion dollars over his two terms. (And those are accumulative numbers.) While pretty much every democratic president reduced the debt, except for once in Clinton's first term. Numbers don't lie . . . And I gag every time I hear some neocon say, "Fiscal conservatives."

This is over and above Reagan's other failures. Like selling drugs for arms in South America, kicking out the mentally disabled and closing the institutions that cared for them. That action single handily started the homeless problem in America. Not to mention Nancy Reagan and her astrologist were most likely responsible for most presidential decisions in Reagan's last couple of years in office.

I actually liked Reagan from a personal standpoint. But he was a disaster as President. It's like the Bush Zero defense, "Oh, but in person he's a really great guy!" Someone else had a great comment on this subject I saw on another site. "Put Reagan on the $25 bill with the promise the other 25 bucks will trickle down to you!" LOL . . .

Sigh . . .

Fortunately there isn't enough good rock left on Mt. Rushmore to put up ANY more faces (or at least that's what I've been told). Decisions like that ought to be left up to artists and not political parties anyway.

I would not be opposed to the creation of a VERY limited edition 40 dollar bill with Reagan's face on it to commemorate his 100th birthday in 2011. In fact, I think that would be pretty flippin' cool, but FFS there's no reason to change the 50.

Given that RR started the whole Voodoo Economics thing and tripled the national debt, they should put his likeness on government IOUs.

How about the $2 bill? Bring it back!

Nick, the last time on that chart is a bit disturbing, and difficult to blame on Bush 0.

I think Obama is including the cost of the two wars Bush Zero started (and hid the price of).

So "inherited" comes to mind . . .

Past guys have inherited shitty situations too. None of them upp'd the debt as a percentage of GDP by 30 points in a single term. Barring a radical change in course, that's the best case scenario for us right now.

fair enough. But what was the joke?

I'm sorry. Not all jokes are about farts. Well, this one was about an old fart, but that's different. Anyway, not everybody laughs at the same things.

Just don't be surprised that other people don't think you're as funny or smart as you do.

Does anyone see the humor in 40th on $40?

Yes.

Same as the humor in the joke about the counterfeiter who makes a perfect $12 bill.

Fair enough. But honestly, how would it have differed with someone else in office?
As for a Reagan bill, I think the $40 is a good idea, with a yellow hue trickling down from top to bottom.

just before ww2 the far left extremist were called marxist and the far right were called fascist.. both extreme sides were socialist.:S

as for blaming Reagan, here is a quote for you...
in late 1982, Volcker cut interest rates and flooded the economy with money, fueling an expansion that lasted seven years. Neither Carter nor Reagan had much to do with the economic events that occurred during their terms. ;)

I was unaware you were an expert on comedy! Holy crap! Where did you do stand up? Can you suggest a good comedy writing class for me to take in LA? Where should I go to learn to write sketch comedy or maybe learn to write for TV and movies? Fuck! I feel like I've wasted my life not talking to you before!

If I read that chart right (and if wrong I now there will be no shortage of folks pointing this out).

NO President from Roosevelt on eliminated our dept. Would this also mean we did not have a Zeroed or balanced budget since we still carried dept? Would this also mean there is no way to have a surplus as we still had dept?

It would appear the closest we got was under Carter (percentage wise).

If I used micro economics and applied this to my home checking account that would be my conclusion.

I, for one, tend to look at Congress when checking out deficits. Since Congress passes budgets, spending bills, etc., I foist the blame for deficits on them.

Hence, I don't blame Obama much for the fiscal mess right now. Congress keeps pushing more spending without the scratch to pay for it. Take a look at health care financing reform. Congress has the authority - not the POTUS.

Just something to think about. (History seems to demonstrate that things work best with a GOP Congress and a Dem POTUS.

Yeah I think the Clinton years seemed pretty good economically, was congress more than 50% republican?

Statistically the deficits correlate far better with the administration than they do with the congress. Not that correlation implies causation, but absence of correlation is a strong indicator of lack of causation.

I think long-term history will credit Clinton as being one of our best presidents. I'd favor a limited-edition $1 bill with his likeness on it, that can only be spent at strip clubs.

The most solemn suggestion I can come up with for "honoring" him would be to put his likeness on a Quija board.

Hoping the public has learnred their lesson about electing senile grade B movie actors to the highest office in the land.
