This is a total crap....all this kind of stuff does is make it okay for people to do stupid shit. Seriously, what happened to actually being responsible for your own actions and learning how to control yourself?

Don't get me wrong...I have my explosive moments, but I am not going to label it as a dissorder to make those actions okay! IMHO, that is a total copout.

Damn those IED's...:S

A new national study has found that some incidents of "road rage" might be triggered by a mental disorder called intermittent explosive disorder (IED), but this diagnosis is meeting with mixed reaction.

I like what they said at the end of the article...

Ferguson said that some "road ragers" do require professional help while others just need to repeat simple thoughts.

"It maybe something as simple as, 'This isn't worth it,' or 'This is not my job today. it's not my job to watch the other drivers,'" he said.

Novotny, however, has a different prescription for would-be road ragers: Take a chill pill.

that really does work;)

I have yet to drvie over one of these stupid idiots who populate our freeways.:)

And I am sure there will be some drug on the market soon to deal with this disorder. Why does it have to be some mental disorder. Why cant they just say "your an asshole" Thats your disorder!B|
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

Good post! Personal responsibility! It IS a copout to say "oh, it's my IED." Yeah, you may HAVE something like this, but you are STILL a volitional creature! Grow up and learn to control yourself!

LOL!!!! oh man, you and I think scarily alike sometimes. when i'm rollin to the dz in my big fat suburban and a little punk ass kid in his lowered civic w/ his loud tin can exhaust cuts me off, i'm SO tempted to muscle him off the road, but then i see the Rosary that my wife hung from the mirror... or, even worse, 1/2 time I've got a kid or two or 4 with me in the SUV and I can't do what I'm thinking, lest I set a horrible example [:/]. Gotta be the adult and not crush the twerp like a little grape.

From what I'm seeing in today's thinking, self control is old school.
I personally drive with a minimum of a 3sec, gap from the car in front of me.
What really pisses me off, is to let someone in at an entrance ramp, knowing that traffic is tight, then watch them shut someone else down at the next ramp, so that they can't get in.
Those people need to be eliminated , at least from the road.

What I really love are the little twerps that think its smart to get in front of you after you have passed them..... and then they slam on the brakes.. eeeesh.. reallly stupid... to do that in front of a diesel 3/4 ton truck...

Careful there! There was an accident near Perris on Sat. A big SUV (Excursion?) rear-ended another car (Honda Civic-size, not sure what make since it was sorta smushed) at highway speeds. SUV rolled, the roof collapsed and killed at least one person. People in the Civic were OK - it looks like it stayed on the road and upright until he could stop it.

I've seen that too... what's w/ that? are they pissed that you passed them? is it an ego thing? are they insulted? do they feel slighted? WTF? I just don't get it. and then there's the fuckwits in the fast lane who go slow and won't move, even when there are SIGNS that say SLOWER TRAFFIC MOVE RIGHT.
You flash your lights at them, b/c the law says, NO PASSING ON RIGHT. It's dangerous. But that pisses them off so they slow down or flip you off or just ignore you. So, then you pass on the right, go around and get on your way, then the dicknoses speed up and tailgate you!!! WTF???? Is the road your own personal NASCAR track??? Do you OWN the fast lane??? Get the fuck over yourself buddy, I just want to PASS you so I can go play in the sky! JESUS!

I really want one of these, but it'll probably get me shot.

Funny that you mention that. On my way home from work yesterday, I saw a black Pontiac Grand Prix with NASCAR stickers all over it, trying to imitate one of the cars apparently.

Some people just take the term redneck to a whole new level.:S

What's the worst is when the jackass going slow in the left lane is on their cell phone and is completely oblivious to everything going on around them.>:(

For this reason I'm considering installing a very large air horn on my car. :|

oh yes, DO install one... no, install several... and jolt the assholes back into reality!!! I love it!!!

my little beater car that I drive (an old ford escort wagon) doesn't have a horn... good thing, says the wife, since I like to blow it (the horn that is :D). So I bought one of those hand held airhorns you can get in the boating section of a sporting goods store. man, those things are LOUD!!!! Really Loud!!!

Not all explanations are necessarily excuses.

Some people might use it as such, but I would say, "Oh, I have IED . . . I'd better get treatment." Not, "I have IED, so I can go act like a psycho anytime I want."

Agreed, some might acutally identify that this may be an issue and fix or work on the problem.....but seriously, most of the people that will claim that it is a 'dissorder' have full control of what comes out of their mouths. People do in fact have the choice to practice self control.

NO...IED is the "cause" of road rage and violent outbursts. But yes, the insurgency is due to IED, so the simple solution is to put medication into the water!! ;)

so, who cares if the 'cause' is something 'diagnosable' or not? other than only for those that CHOOSE to treat it?

Don't the actual actions matter in the end more than any real or perceived cause/excuse?

"I have IED"
"okay then, I understand, I'm very sorry for your issue. You are still paying a fine and spending some time jail - the exact same fine and time if you didn't have this problem. Because you acted wrong regardless of your reason - valid or not. But don't you feel better now that we all sympathize with you? Now get into the back of the cruiser."
