it's hard to read this kind of stuff and not think that america is doomed...

It's easy to read this stuff and think America is not doomed. I used to be concerned that we, as Americans, typically don't know that there are 50 stars on our flag. Or that we don't know that there are 13 stripes - 7 red and 6 white.

There are 5 rights protected in the first Amendment. I thought there were only 4 (I lumped freedom of speech and freedom of the press together).

The part that disheartens me is the, "You are violating my rights" appled to private conduct. People misinterpret the rights we've got. People overstate our rights.

We're flooded with stuf every day. "Wisteria Lane" is in our vernacular now. So they can't state all rights guaranteed by the 1st Amendment? Big deal. Let the lawyers and the courts figure it out.

yeah, I'm not losing any sleep over this one. I lumped all 4 of the freedom of speech ones together - writing, saying, assembly, bitching to the gov - all are obvious forms of that right.

It's a curious method they used to evaluate. In my suvey, I'd ask them to pronounce Apu's last name, and what his wife's name is. If they can't, I'll conclude that Americans know their rights better than they know the Simpsons.

why stop there? how about, "what's the 15th word homer says in episode 34? clearly, that would show that americans know volumes more about their own constitution than the simpsons.

point: americans are entrusted with voting for the leaders who run the country. i find it alarming that only 1 in 4 could name at least two freedoms provided by the first amendment. that's pitiful no matter how you slice it.

This is even better concerning your current avatar.

Frankly, I think it's disgusting that only (a little more than) half can name more than 2 family characters on the Simpson's.

There are only 5 direct family members, a dog, a couple few cats with the same name, and some spot pets for a few individual episodes (think Laddie, 25 puppies, Stompy, etc), at least three grandparents, two aunts and an uncle Herb, and a raft of family reunion Simpson's relatives, Homer's sister in England - how hard could it be to do better than 2? And that's not even delving into the variations in family content allowed via the Holloween episodes.

I'm so enraged I could puke.>:(

It's disgusting the lack of Simpson's knowledge in the US today. We need to give more money to the public schools and force the kids to learn what's important.

TC - you, and FOX NEWS< should be awarded a medal for identifying this horrible mistake in society. I'm starting a collection.

edit: don't forget Homer's Vegas wife

The vast majority (> 95%?) of Americans know of the right to free speech and of religion. Now a huge portion of them may have stupid notions on what those freedoms should really mean, but not knowing it's written in the 1st Amendment in particular isn't troubling.

Too bad they didn't survey on the 2nd- I wonder if it has better penetration due to the constant efforts of groups like the NRA.

Now... Don't laugh...

With the UK's "Socialised-Broadcasting" (BBC), this is actually played to advantage!:) The Archers (a radio series set in a rural community) was famous for steering farmers through the changes in EEC Legislation in laymans terms. The Russians copied the idea for a "soap" set in a block of flats where one of the characters was steered through the intricacies of setting up his own business with the advice of the other characters!:)
The Simpsons already has some excellent social commentary. All it needs is a little fine tuning... Like the words "Bush" and "Vote" on the cooling towers of Mr. Burns' power station... Moe selling Cuban Cigars, Barney being identified as NY Senator Paterson... You get the idea.
