St Petersburg Times reports the teenagers from Pasco Middle and High Schools spotted the 4ft-long reptile in a field on the way home. They eventually persuaded Sherry Hattway to stop the bus while they went to catch it. Four of the 11 pupils on board chased the alligator into a hole. They managed to coax it out using sticks and covered its head with their shirts until a classmate threw them a roll of tape from the bus window. Alligators are quick and you've got to respect them. It isn't always the bite, they'll slap you with their tail. It's like getting smacked with a heavy leather belt. They are fun to play with. When I worked on a construction site, the guards had to check the back of the truck if you drove out the gate. About once a month, we'd put a small one in the back and wait for the jump/scream.
