Moral Dilemma 5

Recommended Posts

Ok, enough of this death and carnage. Here is a real situation that happened to me today:

You have a friend and co-worker who has been wrongfully accused of an offense that could lead to his dismissal. You know him to be innocent of the accusation and you have the opportunity to speak up on his behalf but it has to be on record. You are justifiably fearful of management retaliation and your career advancement would be highly scrutinized if you place yourself in an adversarial role with management. What do you do?

Depends on the career and the other opportunities that exist therein. Personally, F**k management.

It's just a fucking job and if they're ever in a crunch and need to reduce staff they won't think twice about dumping your loyal ass. So do the right thing, always do the right thing. In the long term, you have to be able to look yourself in the mirror everyday and friends are so much more important. When you're on your death bed you won't be wishing you'd kiss managements ass more, you'll hopefully be thinking about the great, righteous life you've had and all the great friends you've had over the years.

I had something like that happen to me a few years back, but reverse the roles. I had some fellow co-workers/friends come to my defense. I ended up collecting unemployment for 18 months and am now working there one to two nights a week. The management that started the problems are no longer there.

Stand by your friend. Pay it forward.

Hopefully this is of value and there's still a window of opportunity. Typically there's a formal process for investigating conduct issues which includes gathering statements. Hopefully you have a grievance procedure too. If you can pull a manager aside and tell them what's up, it can take the issue off the formal track and put it in a file with just a write-up explaining everything. If you write a statement, be slow and compose every thought (sit on your hands.) Don't allow something to construed differently then what you intended. Be lucid, use simple words.
If your friend loses their job and it goes to grievance, now parts of management gravitate to what they think is right and battle lines are drawn. Years ago I helped a friend get his job back (he was out 3 months, reinstated with full back pay.) A few in management didn't like me. Then I got into management. Make a stand. I probably said that too late. So, take it light!

You're always the starter in your own life!

My favorite way to think about moral dilemas is this...

If you have a moral dilema, 9 times out of 10, it's because you know what you feel SHOULD be done...the dilema is the result of trying to talk yourself out of it for some, generally selfish, reason.

Just how I look at it.

I guess it was in the way I wrote the post, but I'm not the one with the dilemma, I'm the accused and my friend and past supervisor, who I thought was a person of integrity, chose not to back me when the chips were down. It will all turn out fine in the end because I can back myself, but I would be totally hosed if I could not... Judas lives.
