The artists obviously got very creative with their cover art.:)
Starling takes the chrysalis to the Smithsonian, where (much later in the book) it is eventually identified as the "Death's Head Moth," so named because of the signature skull design on its back.

The attached picture shows a real "Death's Head Moth" with additional info on it here.
