I'm surprised the entire skydiving community hasn't already switched over to Mac's 'cause, ya know, it IS all about the looks... ;)

You just lost everything.

No file servers?

I think the point was that the help desk wouldn't back anything up before wiping the computer to reload the image....

That's another problem, I used to work for a LARGE corporation and yes, we have servers and ENCOURAGED and I personally DEMANDED that the users saved their data to their network drive, but...maybe 1% does that, why? because something that I've been saying all this time EDUCATE THE USER, I took the time to explain and guide the user, after a 10 or 15 or even 30 mins (depending on how "bright" the user was) NO MORE PROBLEMS.

Now, the "reimaging" and "wiping everything" is a quick solution, yes, why?, because nowadays those corporations are hiring morons who don't know crap about customer satisfaction and IT, why pay a professional (like yours truly) a decent salary when you can hire a doofus and pay him/her minimum wage just to press a key.

Wow...sorry, I didn't mean to rant. :$

Thanks for the rant. It saved me the time. :D

Personally, I put all my documentation on a shared drive. I converted most of their old stuff to HTML format and added some nice Visio pics.

I also got permission to move all the design docs to a shared drive under the guise of helping the managers. "...this way, you always know that you have the most current version..."

You are right though, most of the non-tech people are not using basic guidelines. The first thing you learn about computers is "back it up". Most don't.

A domain or local group policy with the setting pointing to a network share will solve that problem.

True, but you should know that there are users saving stuff in the TEMP directory :S:S:S:S gotta love those.

You might think that I'm such a complainer, but, I love what I do for a living, that's all :)

The whole IT field is like everything else. You can go in all sorts of different directions. I have appreciated this thread because it hasnt really gone off the deep end. Alot of It threads eventually get off on a tangent and never come back.
I just built a new machine with the latest motherboard and Pentium 4 / a gig of ram / sweet video card / xp pro /and a sweet all around box. I spent like $600 bucks. Gathered some parts here and there. Windows is so easy. Lots of software. Im getting into some Linux.
Yee ha.
take it easy.

Same here too. I have Dell 530 that I dual boot between w2k and rhel3-ws, and I also have a w2k "guest" on a vmware rhel3-ws "host". The major problem for me in rhel3-ws are the media clips and mp3, which are licensed technologies, so no dumping w2k yet. However, I still do all my prowling to unknown sites with rhel3-ws, so no spyware and virus issues...yet. I also use a netscreen-5xp firewall appliance with strict policies too.

For Linux or {Free,Net,Open}BSD, just install "xine". I haven't found a media clip it couldn't play.

Well, I loaded the xine 1.0 engine, but gxine front end wouldn't compile for some reason, but I did get the xine-ui to compile, and it's working just fine. I'll have to spend some time with codec binaries, but it's coming together. Thanks!
