Well, there's a whole host of other little things as well... Have you been checking the tension on your chain and cleaning and lubing it at the proper intervals (I do mine about every 500 miles)?

Checking the sprockets for wear when looking at the chain?

Checking oil and coolant levels?

Changing the oil every 1000 miles and the filter every 2000?

Checking the throttle, clutch, and break cables for wear/fraying and adjusting the play?

Checking the inside of the gas tank for rust & sediment?

Changing the airbox and fuel filter?

That's just the things I could think of off the top of my head, and I usually go over those when I change the oil, except for the chain which I checked every couple of weekends.

Bikes, especially sport bikes, are very maintenance intensive machines by their very nature. If you're going to have something that high-performance in so little a package it's a given.

Here's the part where I repeat my suggestion that you shell out the money to get the service manual for your bike. They're really handy to have and cover all of the maintenance in extreme depth, along with other troubleshooting and repair info. It's basically a Chilton's manual for the bike, but you'll get it directly from Kawasaki and it's specific to your Ninja.

Good bikes though. My first sport bike was an 85' Ninja ZX-6.:)

---------------------------------------------
I try to lube the chain every 300 miles.
===========================
Checking the sprockets for wear when looking at the chain?
----------------------------------------------
I really don't know what sprockets are
==============================
Checking oil and coolant levels?
-------------------------------------
from time to time.
===========================
Changing the oil every 1000 miles and the filter every 2000?
-----------------------------------------
no, first oil change I did at 1000, filter included. After that I have been changing filter and oil every 2500.
============================
Checking the throttle, clutch, and break cables for wear/fraying and adjusting the play?
-------------------------------------------
don't know how to do this.
============================
Checking the inside of the gas tank for rust & sediment?
-----------------------------------------------
no
===============================
Changing the airbox and fuel filter?
--------------------------------------------
no. I have changed the fuel filter on my z28 but don't know where on the bike it is.

===========================
Ok thanks, now I think I am going to head to the DZ.

I have ridden very little in the past 2.5 years with it.

Everyone on this thread has really good advice. The only advice I didn't see is Check the condition of your gas in the tank. Gas goes bad after a while when you ridden very little in the past 2.5 years.
Octane goes down from sitting for a while. This can cause your bike to idle bad.

Also not all bike come with fuel filters that can be changed. Some only have a screen built into the petcock that can be cleaned. On those bike that do not have a fuel filter in line, it's best to add one in addition to the screen.

Good Luck,

ok, bike is fairly new so all you need to do is, change the sparks, change the oil and filter, check the tension on the chain, an air filter, and thats pretty much it. $230 is not a lot of money for a bike service but.....then again its a lot of money for sparks, oil and filter, and an air filter. so if you think you are over your head just make sure you are getting more than that for 250. i do all the work on my bike, and yeah i built it.

Ok so I took my ninga zx-9 to get the front tire changed so that I could pass inspection.

The thing that bugs me most about your post is the thing that nobody replied to. You should never let your tires get to the point where you couldn't pass inspectoin. This is not a car and bald tires will kill you VERY fast. You ride a zx-9, take care of your tires!

If the tyre is only treadless, but stll nice rubber, then it's not an issue on DRY roads, mopre rubber = better traction (in general). but if the roads are often wet, then yup you need tread:ph34r:
