Royce Gracie vs. Matt Hughes-May '06

Recommended Posts

UFC rocks dude, there is such a huge variance in the way the different martial arts fight and when you start mixing them all up crazy things happen. Even more interesting is when a known submission guy gets out there with a boxing guy and tried to keep it off the mat. I've only seen a couple of fights that were boring, and I've seen alot that were just plain amazing.

WOW!!!
That would be THE fight. I thought Gracie was retired....

I think Matt is almost invincible, only lost 4 times with 40 wins. But the 4 losses have been by submission, and thats Gracie specialty. But Hughes has incredible streght and knows how to use it.

Very hard to predict, buy Ill say Gracie by submission. Probably choked from behind.

very rarely anymore do you see MMA fighters let someone get on their backs, chances are if Royce wins by submission its going to be something from the guard. He's insanely solid fighting on his back and rarely wastes the energy it takes to achieve top or rear mount. I got to fight him a few years back, we went for 7 minutes and he spanked the shit out of meB|

gracie was a legend in his day, when mma wasnt ready for what he brought. he forced the sport to evolve into the well rounded sport it is today. there is no shortage of amazing submission specialists. i dont think gracie would be the top of the food chain anymore. in conclusion he has the skill and experience to beat matt but i think he is past his prime and matt is at his peak

I just dont know at this point. Royce was an incredible fighter. But I havent seen him fight in years. So who knows how good a fighter he is now. He could have been training and fighting all these years, and he could be 100 times better than he was when UFC first came out. Or he could be old and washed up. I doubt hes washed up- I think its gonna be a damn good fight though. I friggin cant wait to see it.

The sole intention, is learning to fly.Condition grounded, but determined to try. Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies.Tongue tied and twisted, just an Earth bound misfit.

one of the most intriguing things about this match-up is that Royce dominated people before they had weight classes in the beginning of UFC. He beat shamrock, Kimo, and Dan severn and they out weighed him by about 30,40, and 60 lbs.

i don't know if Matt could have stood w/ shamrock or the others but he is definately a powerhouse in his weight division.

If matt can keep it standing he'll win, if it goes to the ground and matt can get full mount his striking is better also. If it goes to the ground and matt can't get mount I think Royce will submit him.

3 of Matts losses come from submissions.
both of of Royces losses were stopped by his corner (TKO)...

should be an interesting fight...

Royce is still very active in the fight world with one of the longer MMA match in history 90 min against Japanese Superstar Kazushi Sakuraba in PRIDE Grand PRIX 2000, and total domination of the
Olympic Judo Gold Medalist Hidehiko Yoshida in
PRIDE Shockwave 2003.

His largest opponent yet was Sumo Grand Champion Akebono, 6' 8" 486lbs. Royce vs. Akebono was the main event of K-1 Premium Dynamite New Years Eve show on 12/31/2004. Royce defeated the giant in just 2min and 13sec with a shoulder lock.

I wouldn't count him out. Is he past his prime, remember Couture is three years his senior. I can't wait to see this match.

couture is 3 years older but hes been fighting the whole time and is constantly improving and evolving his skills and conditioning. royce being past his prime doesnt mean he should be written off at all. the question is has gracie evolved with the sport

Royce has been fighting all this time as well, just not in UFC, he's been fighting in japan a lot, and is still the incredible grappler that he's always been but now has more refined striking skills, not at the same level as Matt with striking but he can still throw a few.

when I fought Royce I watched him throw a guy that weighed probably 250+ so hard that the guys feet hit the ceiling when he went over Royce. He's incredibly quick and agile and extremely relaxed when he fights, great guy though, lots of fun to roll with.

Is this going to be regular UFC rules or will they waive the time limits on the rounds? (The institution of time limits was one reasont Royce quit fighting in the UFC)

Im sure you know more than me, youre a fighter. I just said that bcuz last time Matt gave his back to Trigg. He escaped that, but I think Gracie has a lot more technice than Trigg. And if Im not wrong, Royce is about 20lbs heavier. If Matt makes same mistake, he will tap.

Its a gamble, but my $ still with Gracie. ($1)

I haven't seen how heavy Royce is lately, but from what I know he's always tried to keep weight off to stay more agile. You're right about Royce having better technique, but he's always been a dominant fighter on his back, some people(myself included) don't feel like wasting the effort to get on top;), I personally want to see Royce end it with something slick that no one sees coming, like an Omo Plata(shoulder lock).
