What is this thing?

I have seen bugs similar to that in Florida. They were black with red spikes instead of white. But same basic concept. Not really sure what they are thou [:/]

Those were all over the place in southern florida where I grew up. Not sure of the exact type of spider they are but we always called them crab spiders.

edit - had to look it up, they are Gasteracantha cancriformis or elipsoides, aka spiny, crab, or jewel spiders...a type of orbweaver.

It is a spinybacked spider

I think their official name is
Gasteracantha cancriformis (Araneae: Araneidae)

I have a friend that lives in Hawaii and I would see them in her garden when I would go visit her. They are very cool and I love bugs but, it was quite a shock when I first saw one crawling on me by the pool. I think they bite but I am not sure if or how poisonous they are.
