That! I'm thankful for people like Sunshine who make statements like that which make me crack the hell up! Somehow they have the ability to state what I am already thinking.:D

I'm thankful that I have a friend who writes these amazing Thanksgiving emails to all his friends and family every year. I'd almost forgotten about it, but there it was in my email again today. Backstory - he's an American ex-pat living in Thailand. He started writing these letters when he first moved there and was longing for home a bit. He's since built quite a life there - met and married his wife and had a beautiful little girl. I've removed names but otherwise this is his verbatim email. Made me smile. :)

Dear Friends and Family,

Greetings again from Thailand (how the time flies…)!
I hope you all are enjoying this special day with
loved ones.

As usual this time of year, I’ve been thinking about
thankfulness and happiness. I think we all know that
an important part of being thankful – and happy, in
fact – is being able to realize and appreciate even
the simple, everyday things that can bring joy and
fulfillment to our lives. I’m sure this is something
that we all try to do, especially on days such as
today, when we take the extra effort to be grateful
for all the things that make our lives special and
wonderful.

But there’s also another important part of being
thankful and happy which is more commonly overlooked,
and I was reminded of this from something I observed
the other day in our 2-year old daughter T.

T, N [wife], and I were playing chase when T
slipped and fell, bumping her head against the table
(no worries, nothing serious!). Not surprisingly she
started to cry; sobbing actually, with tears flowing
down her cheeks. As usual we picked her up and held
her, speaking softly and trying to calm her down.

As we did this her 4-year old cousin came by and
started making faces and tickling her. Immediately
T began laughing, then she returned to crying,
then back to laughing again, and so on back and forth
until we couldn’t tell whether she was crying or
laughing. However, within a matter of seconds, she
was fully laughing and playing with her cousin,
evidently forgetting her recent spill.

I was amazed to see how quickly she had transitioned
from the initial pain and shock to joy and good humor.
As a toddler, it seems that her emotions – and memory
– are much more fluid, allowing her to shift quickly
from one to another with little if any residual
feelings. Basically, she was able to very quickly let
go of the “bad” feelings and easily grasp the “good”
ones, allowing her to become happy again soon after
her accident.

Why wasn’t I able to do this so easily and naturally?
When I get frustrated or angry, or feel regret or
disappointment, I have a much harder time letting go
of the negative emotions. Instead, they simmer within
me as I mull and brood over them, often becoming even
more toxic in the process!

If only I could be more like T, easily letting go
of the “bad” feelings and embracing the “good” ones,
then wouldn’t I be a happier and more thankful person?

This Thanksgiving, then, I’ve resolved to tend to both
sides of the “thankfulness equation” – not only making
an effort to see and be grateful for the small and big
things that make life so meaningful and wonderful, but
also to let go of ill will, regret, frustration,
disappointment, anger, and other such negative
thoughts and feelings that make it more difficult to
be happy and thankful.

Wishing you all a joyful and “childlike” Thanksgiving!

*God. No matter where I am in life, I'm hard-pressed to find a time when his providence was not totally evident in one form or another.
*My family. Tho they're all on the west coast and I'm in Florida, I don't know where I'd be in life without them. Can't wait to see my parents, nephews and sister for Christmas. :)*My uniform. It truly is a privilege to serve. :)*My kitties. In exchange for food, they make purrs, meows, snuggles and warm piles of dookie.
*My penis

Im thankful that I never have to make the drive again to Minnosota. Im also really thankful that over the past two years my eyes have woken up to the point I realize blood can be just as thick as water. Im not thankful that I am about to sit my ass in a car for the next 18 hours getting as far away from this hell hole as possible.... I hate driving
Sudsy Fist: i don't think i'd ever say this
