matc 0 #1 January 12, 2007 I will soon buy my first canopy and since it will be a used one, I was wondering if I should ask a rigger to inspect it before buying it. I'll probably buy it from someone at my dz but I don't know anything about canopies. What do you have to look for when purchasing a used main ?
skybeergodd 0 #2 January 12, 2007 Most smart people do ask their rigger to inspect gear prior to buying it. I know that is a serivice that I offer without charge for new jumpers and my regular customers.
MagicGuy 0 #3 January 12, 2007 If you're buying it from someone at the DZ than you have the luxury of having your rigger look at it. If that's the case, why not take advantage of having the rigger right there. In other cases, as in buying off of the classifieds section of this site, you may not have that option. Usually, if someone is serious about making the sale, they won't have a problem with having your rigger look at the canopy before making the purchase. The most important thing, in my opinion, is to talk to your instructors before you even consider buying the canopy to be sure that it is within your limits. You don't want to buy a canopy that's too small and not be able to jump it. Good luck!
matc 0 #4 January 12, 2007 I've already talked to my instructor and he suggested me a hurricane or sabre 2

Mark4 0 #7 January 12, 2007 Are you sure a Hurricane was suggested? This is a fully elliptical canopy in the Stiletto class requiring a minimum of several hundred jumps experience. http://www.dropzone.com/gear/Detailed/432.html Buying from your home DZ is great but you just need to be sure the advice you are getting is impartial. I'm not suggesting it isn't but if you think there might be vested interests then it's worth speaking with some of the independent gear dealers.... there are several around on this forum! If you haven't done so already, have a read of Lisa's great article http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/safety/detail_page.cgi?ID=45 Between the two canopies you mention the Sabre 2 is the more sensible choice although bear in mind you would be loading it at what PD reckon is a intermediate to advanced level. http://www.performancedesigns.com/sabre2.asp Edited to fix URLs doh!
