skytash 0 #5 June 17, 2007 isn't summer solstice the start of winter, because it actually marks the mid-point of the summer season? I know the weather doesn't really care about these things, but here in England we KNOW it can read calendars 'cos it always rains on a bank holiday! tashDon't ever save anything for a special occasion. kbordson 8 #6 June 17, 2007 Quoteisn't summer solstice the start of winter, because it actually marks the mid-point of the summer season? tash This is what I have always been taught Quoten the northern hemisphere, the longest day of the year (near June 22) when the Sun is farthest north. In the southern hemisphere, winter and summer solstices are exchanged. The summer solstice marks the first day of the season of summer. The declination of the Sun on the (northern) summer solstice is known as the tropic of cancer (23° 27'). Source
