LOL I have a few people in the office who are retirement age. It's a topic of discussion about every other day.

I also find it very funny that many of the people here (in my office) fear retirement in other countries. They are afraid of the health care systems, possible coup, fear of being stuck and not being able to return to the U.S. :S

This is a Complete no brainer to me.

Costa Rica.

Housing: Great deal can still be found.
Benefits: Great people (they actually still like Americans unlike most of the rest of the world), Great Culture, Beautiful Country.
Culture: Pura Vida!!!
Health: Fantastic health care available.
Infra-structure: Some of the roads really suck and get washed out pretty bad during the rainy season but if you are in a Major City or one of the Americanized area, No problems.
Safety: No worse than any other poor Big City.
Climate: Great Year Around.

and the #1 reason: Ticas!! wow!! Just Fucking WOW!!!
Oh and Imperial Beer isn't all that bad.

Pura Vida!!

I'd have to agree with that (and I was in Costa Rica just last year). It's not perfect (the roads really are pretty awful), but nowhere is perfect. But of the listed places, it has probably the best combination of cost and accessibility. In Central America, flights to the US (to see the grandchildren ) aren't all that expensive; neither are phone calls etc.

English is a mandatory second language throughout school, and schooling is mandated, unlike many other SA and CA countries. They traded a military for education -- good trade!

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
