MegaMillions and LOST

Tonight's MegaMillions lottery numbers: 4-8-15-25-47-42.
LOST numbers: 4-8-15-16-23-42.

Weirdly similar.

Odds of them being this similar are one out of 8,078,336.

That odd of 1/8,000,000 sounded strangely low when I saw this earlier today.

The actual odds or having 3/5 plus the multiplier is actually 1/13,781

I think we both f'ed up our calcs... It in between:

its' not 1/56^3 for the 1st set of numbers, it's 1/(56*55*54) *3! since there is no order to the right numbers (unless you want to argue that which of the 3 numbers is a match is important, and I dont think it is). Then, * 1/46

So it's 1/1,275,120

I NEED TO KNOW!

I am currently pushing my glasses up my nose with one finger.

Wiki says 2 machines: one for the 1st 56, one for the 46.

But then again, it had the bad odd calculation (tho properly referenced) I had initially! lol

The last number (42) is drawn from a pool of balls numbered 1 through 46. The rest are numbered 1 through 56.

They are mutually exclusive events, so:

P=1/((56^3)*46) = 1/8,078,336

edited for grammarz!!1!1

That's wrong.

First of all the same numbers can't be drawn twice. Hence the amount of possible lines is 56*55*54*53*52. But since 1,2,3,4,5 and 1,2,3,5,4 are the same line you need to count only the unique combinations. Therefore the correct amount of 5 number lines is (56*55*54*53*52)/(1*2*3*4*5) which is 3,819,816 which then gets multiplied with 46 to give a total of 175,711,536 lines.

The amount of lines with 3/5 and the extra number is (combinations of 3 out of 5 numbers)*(combinations of 2 out of 51 numbers)*(combinations of 1 out of 1) or 5!/(3!*(5-3)!) * 51!/(2!*(51-2)!) * 1! / (1! * (1-1)!) or 10*1,275*1 = 12750. ( 5! is just a neater way to say 5*4*3*2*1 ) so the chances are 12,750 / 175,711,536 or roughly 1 in 13,781.3
Your rights end where my feelings begin.

I am happy I'm not the only one who thought the same thing when I saw the numbers.

I've always been tempted to play the LOST numbers but have decided not to since I'm sure there are TONS of LOST fans out there that do the same and if the numbers ever did come in you'd end up sharing with too many others.
