Noob just starting out

Recommended Posts

Hello. I'm originally from sunny southern California, staying in San Antonio, TX for the time being. I've done tandem skydiving 3 times in Camarillo, Lake Perris, and Taft. I've had the time of my life everytime. I've decided now is the time to finally take the next step and complete my AFF classes and gety A license.

The nearest dropzone to me right now would be Skydive San Marcos.

I have a few questions before I schedule my first AFF.

Should all of the AFF classes be completed at the same dropzone? I have a hectic schedule, so I might have to complete a few of the AFF classes here in TX, and finish up the rest of my jumps when I go back to CA this summer.

Someone mentioned to me that San Antonio does not have the best conditions for skydiving. He mentioned the atmospheric conditions here are not friendly to parachuting. Is there any truth to this?

Hey there. I spent time in San Marcos coming from Austin. It has windy days just like any other DZ but I hadn't noticed anything more than normal.

In terms of doing AFF at different DZs, I did that. I did my first jump at one DZ, then did the next 3 at another before finishing at the original DZ. I will say that having the same instructors that go with you on each jump helps you learn faster. Also each DZ's AFF is slightly different than the next so there could be chances to miss out on some learning. If I could go back, I would have done it all at 1 DZ. A benefit to getting to multiple DZs is many people early in their careers learn to fly based on the geography of that DZ, for example they set up their landing pattern based on landmarks. Getting to a new DZ you can break that habit. After I got my A i went to about 10 DZs and it really helped just get familiar with how different places do things, and learn from different jumpers.

Thanks for the input. I understand what you all mean, I agree getting all of my classes done at one place would definitely be ideal. I guess I'll have to wait to see if I can make that happen.

LOL a few of my friends went tandem with Voodoo before it happened. It was pretty funny to see that after.
