  1. So i think ive found a loophole for my problem. Pulse 170 should fit in a container designed for 135-150 So i get the container i want and still flying a canopy thats not too small. my wingload will be 1.1 Comments? Corrections?
  2. Alot of people (at least at my DZ and at the one boogie i went to) have cameras on their heads already, GoPros especially. Ive not really thought of the AFF instructor work as a job really cause we only have clubs here in Estonia. but yes i agree that if you JOB is a AFF instructor then you should not be buying vid equipment that you wouldent have anyway just for that without getting something in return. Dragon made a good point, packing ticket sounds sufficient. Its when i see the posts that it costing another 20 or 25 USD ur making the camera price back in a few AFF courses. Idk maybe i just dont understand how things work in the industry part of skydiving. Either way, video is worth it.
  3. According to your info you have been in sport for 8 years have a little over 150 jumps and A license. I would also not be looking to downsize below a 1:1 (190) if i didnt jump as often as i do. That being said i think a canopy course would be a great idea. Does someone have one to recommend in the UK or other part of Europe? Also no matter who you are or how much training you have your going to botch landing every so often. Watched a 13000+ jump guy eat some grass at our last big boogie.
  4. Sorry Sparky this was my mistake. i weigh 75 kilos which is actually 165 pounds so my exit weight would be 190ish
  5. Thanks for the all the info. Just to remind as there seems to be alot of strong opinions here that im not intending to get a 150 but was toying with the idea and was curious what others had thought. Should i have decided to buy a 150 or 135 or even 103 i would not have jumped it until i was ready be that at 100 jumps or 1000 jumps :) I think a 170 will suit me fine now and for quite a while as do my instructors. Thanks dragon2 you make a good point, will bring this up.
  6. ok i guess i wasent very clear with the above post :S Downsizing for the sake of having a smaller canopy is not what i want. its more that i want my own gear, especially after my lineover from 2 weeks ago i want to be sure its something i packed cause i know that im careful with it. And to this end i started looking at rigs. With the 190 i get far more accurate landings then from the 280s as they tend to move ALOT with the wind, even last minute gusts will carry you an extra 35+ meters. With stronger winds it can be possible to not make it all the way back to the packing area and have a good walk after the jump. easier packing with the 190 then the 280s So i guess it comes down to. i think a 170 will be able to move against the wind better and have more accurate landings. I do not intend to be swooping in the near future. 170 will be alot easier to pack the smaller container is alot more comfortable in our small cramped airplane. the 190 showed me that. I feel comfortable with the 190 but i know i will want something a little faster in the near future. So its mostly about getting something i know will keep me happy for a few years and i think a 170 then 150 will do this. Just as a side note i have gone over all this with my instructor before making this post and we agree that i should get a 170 and that i will have to make another 20 jumps or so on the 190 before downsizing. if i were to buy a 150 it would be at least 100 more jumps until i would be allowed to jump it. im very safety conscious and do not at all intend to jump something until im ready. EDIT* @rehmwa i would say that from next year i plan to get around 200 jumps a year.
  7. The main deciding factor for the 170 vs 150 is the possibility to downsize in the future (container size). I would say the main reason for downsizing to begin with is that i feel very comfortable with the 230 F-111 older canopy we have at the club (although it cant flare for anything) and the 190 Sabre which feels safer and more controllable then the 230. Since ive been jumping the 190 recently and feel very good with it and plan to buy my own soon i want it to be something i can jump for and still use the container for my next canopy. So a 170-150 container seems to fit the bill. but then this got me thinking that a 150 is not that much smaller and will be the next size down container. So its more the choice of the container size then the canopy over from what im told there is not so big a difference between a 170 and 150.
  8. hey, Im looking into getting a new rig soon, one of the main things i didnt like about the student canopys is that the harness never fit as nice as i wanted and well it wasent always me who packed it. found a decent deal on a new wings container with Sabre2 main. I have jumped a Sabre1 190 about 15 (75 jumps total) times and have had no problems landing it or controlling it in the air. i weigh about 75 kilo/ 150 pounds. As the containers are made in different sizes (175-150 OR 150-135) i would like to get the 150 so i can keep the same container with a future downsize. Of course i will take all info here as opinions only and my instructors will have final say :) Nutshell: 170 vs 150 weight: 65 kilo/165 pounds Jumps: 75 (15 on a 190) Thanks for the info
  9. That sucks that they make you pay for it. With GoPros and things that do not require an expendable material to record on there is no reason for that :( Tell them to record for free and debrief like they should for the AFF course fees :P
  10. Had my first cutaway on jump 63 due to a line over on rental gear that i did not pack. Its interesting that this happened to me on that jump cause i remember the person who packed it last weekend saying they were too tired to pack and asked me if i wanted to instead. as i was going up on the next load i declined the next weekend i jumped with that gear/pack job and got the line over. learned alot from this jump, more then i had expected. I learned that i remain quite calm when dealing with a mal, at least a slow one. and im now sure that i wll be buying my own rig this winter at least then i know whats packed in there. The following is how i described the incident on the report. Tracked away from the 3 way at 1500 and pulled at 1000. In the first seconds i thought it was just a offheading opening but then noticed it did not stop turning to the left. Grabbed the right rear riser and pull down about 20 cm to stabalize the flight and do a canopy check. On the check i noticed that the left 2-3 cells were not really inflated properly and that the area around the 3rd cell was being choked by one of the lines. This is when i understood it was a line over, probably a total of about 4-5 seconds between pull and realization of the malfunction. I quickly checked the altimeter and noted about 700m i think. Mostly i registered that it was well above the 500 mark so im not sure the exact higth. Grabbed both handles and looked below to make sure no one was there and then pulled the cut away, as soon as my right arm was at full extension i pulled the reserve ring which came out rather easy, i think the RSL beat me too it. Felt the feeling of falling and then a sort of hard opening. The left cells of the reserve did not inflate right away so the canopy turned to the left, this is when i dropped the handles and grabbed the risers, did the canopy check and then proceeded to land it. Landing was perfectly fine without falling or injury. I have to say im quite thankful to my AFF instructors, its because of them that i knew exactly what to do and how to do it. After landing was on the next load up :) Blue Skys, Jim
  11. 4 days ago :) its mandatory for our club at least once every 60 days. i prefer to do it more often and with different scenarios. Always good to know and not need then to need and not know
  12. Im pretty new to this sport (62 jumps) and there is nothing i want more then to know how it all works. its not at all enough to know that it works for others and that it has worked for a long time. without understanding how it works i would have had a hard time jumping that first jump. I spent a good few days researching at first to at least know the very basics about rigs and how they operate. I personally dont understand how someone can jump out of a plane without knowing what they have on their backs to save them.
  13. Damn thats rough... this makes me glad im in a skydiving CLUB not paying some DZO. Prices i see from sites DZ in the states are insane and this only adds to it. A jump costs me 21 EUR and 5 EUR gear rental (37 USD) I pack myself so thats not a factor. Back to topic, i just got my B License and most of the things i got signed off free but someone who had nothing else to do that jump. (still bought her some jumps thou) I think if u can its nice to buy the ''coach'' or person helping you their jump IF you can but by no means should be required. When im good enough to help someone i will as much as possible, makes for more people to jump with in the future :)
  14. Once read somewhere here in someones sig the following: Dont panic if you have a canopy malfunction, you have the rest of your life to figure it out. Thought that was true and funny so im looking for other sayings or famous last words. Also heard ˇˇSkydiving, what could possibly go wrongˇˇ XD Jim
  15. I don tknow about safer but i have noticed that my reactions have gotten a bit quicker EG: catch the beer before it spills ect. Although before skydiving i had no fear of flying at all but now have a slight worry in the back of my head when flying cause i dont have a parachute with me.
  16. yea thats the same plane looks like.... The wind is still moving pretty quick when we exit, i dont expect it willl happen with us, BUT always good to see what it can look like if it does... 8 hours of work then its jump time!
  17. This was at a small gathering we had out on an island called Kihnu in Estonia. were there for 5 days. we have another event coming up soon called Parasummer ( http://parasummer.com/ ) Usual DZ is in Rapla Estonia @dks13827 - Thanks, i feel pretty comfortable in the skys :)
  18. You could leap out and get to it im sure its not too far out, but you dont have to take special care not to hit it either, the prop wind pushes u back pretty good from that close it seems. back to the DZ tomorrow for weekend jumping! if the weather cooperates
  19. Not sure what the make/model of the plane is :S Its a twin engine, 2 blade propeller. not a turbo prop. Holds 10 people. ES-PNA is the registry number in EU. Going to the DZ tomorrow ill UL a pic or something.
  20. Thank you for the links kind sir.. i had hoped that was automatic
  21. Hey, Just wanted to share my AFF jumps. Level 7 isnt here as ive not got the footage to upload yet. Also if my first contact exit with someone other then an instructor (12th jump) The plan was Dive exit, up and down movement, break off and track, upward movement eluded me this time -.- lvl 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEGFZlkk_XU lvl 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C51LlpWkZlQ lvl 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huf7snvv03w lvl 4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69P6phCQY9Q lvl 5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2sDHqkIJ9g lvl 6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=280QrOACK7Q Dive Exit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX2jPEDjg3k Comments welcome
  22. I think it was this one: http://www.aerodium-technologies.com/en/products/models/3178/ but it might have been the biggest open air one aswell. it was down in a little gully kinda place, there was no wind that i could tell.
  23. Hello, Ive just done 8 min of wind tunnel training and plan to start AFF courses this Saturday. I think its helps at least let me know that i can arch and not flip on my back. still have some trouble with the legs :P Im curious the differences between freefall and wind tunnel. I noticed that in the wind tunnel when flying alone i kept starting to spin in one direction, instructor said this was due to the fact that the airs being moved by a fan. But i also noticed that the air was very choppy, not sure if it just felt this way because of the super baggy suit flapping around or if its again the whole propeller thing. Any insight into the differences is appreciated :) Thanks
  24. After reading this i have booked some tunnel time aswell. First AFF jump in 9 days and counting!
  25. Awesome thanks for the info. Will be taking what the teachers say first for sure and will clear my head. Very excited!
