  1. A coworker of mine thought that freeflying involved going upward for a period of time during the dive. I guess he figured that body control wouldn't be possible while falling! He was totally serious. I just nodded and said, "ummm...yeah that's right." I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  2. My dog ate my SIM. I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  3. I haven't jumped since Aug 15th, but I'll be getting back into it in Dec, after my semester ends. At this point, I have completed my AFF course, I am solo, but I am not yet licensed. Will I need more than just the refresher course to pick up where I left off? I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  4. If anyone is in the military, I could use a little feedback. I'm considering joining the Air Force, but I won't take that step if it means sacrificing my ability to skydive. I have a sister in the navy, so I'm aware of the commitment that's required when joining. I have plenty of reasons to join and one major reason not to. The fact is, I love to jump. It's made me happier than I've been in years. I wouldn't want to lose it for anything. The military isn't a long term goal for me- I just feel like it would be a step in the right direction at this point in my life. I'm hoping that it's possible to have both, but I really won't know until I speak to somebody who's done both. I'd appreciate any helpful advice!! I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  5. I'm taking a trip out west a the end of July. I'll be visiting Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Can anyone recommend a dropzone or wind tunnel in either area? I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  6. So, a photo of a four year old flipping the bird is supposed to exemplify how evil Americans are "demonizing" Westboro Church. Yeah, that kid deserves a taste of God's wrath. Obviously. What a kook! I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  7. Has anybody heard about Madeline- the three year old British girl who was abducted from a resort in Portugal? A bulletin was just sent out to all Myspace users to get the word out. Here's a link to the story: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/05/04/nportugal104.xml I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  8. We're still trying to figure out where we'll be going. Possibly the Los Angeles area. I'm sort of leaning toward San Diego. I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  9. I just made plans to go to California with a friend at the end of July. Can anyone reccomend a good area with a dropzone? My friend doesn't skydive, so I'm looking for a place that's in or near a good city.. I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  10. My first name + the golden ratio (1.618) It's a number that appears everywhere in nature-faces, plants, solar systems, etc. I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  11. I'm not so sure it's the illegals we should be worrying about. I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  12. It's true. This country doesn't really have much pride. It's because we have no cultural unity. Italy has the colloseum and fettucini alfredo. Scotland has haggis and William Wallace. Ireland has Guinness and Murphy's Irish Stout! Americans don't share a history. The short history that we do have includes the country splitting in half and killing over 600,000 of our own people. We haven't had the time to develop a common ground in America. Pride stems from unity, but unfortunately, we're more like a chunky stew than a melting pot I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  13. Hey...I've got to say, those minutes right before the jump are unnerving! I'm also on my AFFs. I've found that focusing on your surroundings and every little detail in the plane, rather than on your pending jump, helps to calm your nerves a bit. Next time you're in the plane, think about a song that pumps you up and reminds you of skydiving. I usually pick a song that I find on a skydiving video. Once that song is playing in your head, look around and pay attn to the minor details...smudges on the window, stickers on the airplane wall, the jumpsuits people are wearing, and so on. It helps keep you in the "here and now" on your way up. In fact, I used this trick on a job interview today, and it worked wonders! I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  14. These women's kids have yet to see plenty of distasteful images in their life. Sheltering a child from what you think is "harmful" or negative will do them more harm than good. Why should one child have to live life with a debilitating disease or an abusive parent while the kid next door is throwing a fit because he's not allowed to have an ice cream cone? If you ask me, opening your kids eyes up to the world will allow them to better cope when something actually does happen to them. If these kids aren't even allowed to see a billboard, they're going to be in for a shock when the shit really hits the fan! I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  15. Now you're starting to make sense! There are too many humans on this planet. It sounds heartless, but feeding the starving nations only increases the amount of starving mouths in the next generation. Between improved medical care and our selfishness regarding the resources on this planet, our numbers will just keep on growing. In nature, most creatures die off when their numbers begin to exceed the food supply. That keeps the population in check. We've learned how to get around it. I once got into an argument with a hunter who claimed that deer were overpopulating the state. C'mon! When they start driving our taxis and totin' the guns, maybe then I'll start to worry a little. I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  16. Ideally, yes. I agree with you 100 percent. I realize that if every one of us hunted for ourselves (and those of us who are incapable of doing so became vegetarians), we wouldn't be throwing so many lives out the window. Unfortunately, that won't be happening anytime soon. Our world is stuck in it's ways. Between restaurants and supermarkets, there's no chance that the nation will make the collective decision to make this change. The demand for meat will always be high. I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  17. Hi James. I'm working on getting my license too, but it's been pretty windy in Jersey. How are your AFFs going? I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  18. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who gave me advice on my level 3. I jumped twice this afternoon after a month long hiatus. It gets better every time! I'm looking forward to taking my level 5 next week I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  19. "One thing that I can assure you though, the meat in my freezer has lived much more humanely than the meat in the supermarket. To top it off I get rewarded with exceptional tasting meat for how I choose to aquire my meat. Both benefits are important to me. In my mind you should be looking up to people avoiding store bought meat, not down. " ___________________________________________ Interesting. I've never thought about it that way before. You make a good point. You should check out the book 'Ishmael'. In it, a 500 lb gorilla has a philosophical discussion about the state of the world. He mentions the amount of lives that are wasted because of our failed attempt at organization by mass slaughtering. In other words, if we all just killed for ourselves, far less lives would be lost. Still, I don't think I'd ever be capable of doing so unless it was a matter of life or death.. Apology accepted I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  20. "I do, however, make a great Ferret and Weasel Chili, with stuffed Cardinal pastries." _________________________________________- I see you have a knack for the culinary arts. I'll have to steal some recipes from you I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  21. "I only eat free-range Shih Tzu and Labrador. Greyhound is too gamey." _______________________________________ Try it with a little risotto and a balsamic reduction. You'll feel differently. I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  22. "..Do you like Ringtail Lemurs?" ________________________________________ Only when they're breaded and pan seared. I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  23. Alright. I went too far apparently. We're having a heated debate. Had I known that my opinion would insult you personally as much as it did, I wouldn't have posted it. I apolologize for any miscommunication. This topic happens to be one that I've felt strongly about for years, so if I came across too strongly, I'm sorry. I feel the way I feel. I won't judge you as a person for feeling differently. I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
  24. If anybody here was really that concerned with our health and well being, we wouldn't be jumping out of planes. I'm sure you've eaten things far worse than store bought meat. Besides, I believe the existence of life takes priority over my own minor health concerns. I'm willing to bet that my life won't be cut short by my consumption of Perdue lean cuts. I tried to get a grip on reality, but it moved.
