  1. It needs to be done at the time of the repack. If it is done later, the same rigger that repacked it needs to do the switch since he packed it last.

Good on you, the more you know about your gear, the better. Your life depends on it.

  2. You should have contacted these noobs to see if they wanted to get in on that action. They had the same idea at less than 45 jumps as well, and everyone told them it was a bad idea then too:

45 jumps. "is it possible to get lenses for the helmet that are either dark/tinted or mirrored? Jus thought it'd be different to the usual clear ones...? "

38 jumps. "I want to buy a pair, so that you can't see that I'm wearing glasses under the goggles."

20 jumps. "The last thing I want is a completely mirrored/black lens that it wont be possible to see my face."

  3. "Performance Designs is identifying top CP pilots and contacting them directly with the opportunity to fly the PEREGRINE, based on their experience and historical competition results. The PEREGRINE will not be made available through our PD dealer network. If you are seriously interested in a Peregrine, the best way to let us know is to continue competing on your Comp Velocity. As you demonstrate your skills and experience, and rise among the CP ranks, we will most certainly take notice."

It's PD's canopy, they can set the rules however they want. Don't like it...oh well I guess.

Safire2-129 might be a fast canopy for me, but not fast enough to be pricey. I sold Tri-160 and bought it used actually saving some money.

    WTF dude...speechless.

Best reason to downsize right there...said no one.

  5. If you're ordering everything new, then yes, you will get all the parts that you need.

Containers come with pilot chutes (Main/Reserve), free bag/bridle. Main pod/deployment bag), and risers.

    Canopies come with links/softlinks.

If you are buying used, clarify with the seller as to what is actually coming with the item (they should all come with the appropriate parts though).

  6. Found it online:

High Resilience Foam - 3.0 lb
    Foam Sheets, cushion foam

What did you get for Thickness and Firmness?

  7. If you see a white Safire 129 being jumped in your neck of the woods, watch out, this guy has mad skillz.

Holy hell, it's like watching a train wreck, somebody has hopefully pulled this guy aside for a talk about basic canopy control, progression, downsizing, and general safety.

    WTF...

    "Just downsized from Triathlon-160 to Safire 2 - 129.
Learning to swoop, jumps approx 100-166.
ANY suggestions / drills / comments WELCOME!

    Jump# in the corner.

  8. If your not worried about presentation, 1 or 2 kitchen trash bags work well. You can also use a vacuum to suck out all the air in the bag to make it as small as possible. Getting a 170 in a medium flat rate box is usually not a problem and anything bigger fits in a large flat rate with that system.

  9. They are actualyy shot and a half capwells and they don't release them and activate their reserve. They just pull their reserve if they have a malfunction.

I'll just say you'll probably use your reserve before he does!

  10. I'll share the details when I get them, it was a fairly normal online transaction with the seller that did not know much about it, but his brother might. He is suppose to call me in a few days with hopefully more insight.

I will be posting more pics soon as well.

Glad you all have enjoyed the rig!

  11. First of all, DZs have weight limits for the training for a few reasons, one of those being safety and not breaking the law. The majority of skydiving harness and containers have a max exit weight of 254lbs. Some are certified for 300lbs, it just depends on what they have. So if you think you are going to go in there and "fudge" the numbers a little, think again, most DZ's put you on a scale to verify what you wrote.

Secondly and this maybe harsh and completely unfounded, but being 6'2" and 245 is probably not from lifting weights at 17. There are not that many big guys that jump and at your weight you will find a lot of challenges in buying gear or fitting on small planes to name a few. Stop watching YouTube videos and get outside or to a gym and excercise more than a "smidge", it will be a lot easier to lose the weight now than later and will make learning to skydive easier, you will be more comfortable, more flexible, and lesson the chance of you being injured.

  12. Ok, Ok good job guys! It is in fact a Russell "Lobe" Parachute, made by the Russell Parachute Company, San Diego, CA.

I have a lot of research to do on this, without very much info to be gained from the previous owner. I can't confirm the DOM since I have not opened it up yet to see if the canopy is marked in any way, I also do not know if it is silk or the cotton variety of canopy yet. The carry bag it came in (and I guess spent its ENTIRE life in) is marked with a different serial # than what is on the container. I'm not sure if the container stamp is factory russell, or the servicing dealer that packed it stamped it.

I can tell you this for certain, it was packed in 1936 only once form the parachute dealer and has been like that way for up to 83 years! (If in fact built in 1930 like the carry bag states).

The way the ripcord opens up the container with no pilot chute is very interesting. I would have (tried to) stow the ripcord, but the bungee inside the ripcord pocket has long since given up the fight to hold anything, so the ripcord will not stay in unfortunetly.

The other interesting note about this container is the D-rings on the main lift webs, I initially thought this was a PEP, but after looking in Poynters, I noticed Russell had made a "Trainer" container that allowed a chest reserve to be fitted on the front!!! So could this be one of the oldest "dual" parachute skydiving rigs in existance?!? Maybe!

I haven't figured out when/where/how I'm going to open it up to inspect it, but if/when I do it will be fully documented since I do not think another one of these, in this conditon/state will be found anytime soon.

Has anyone ever seen a Russell Lobe in person, either in a museum or personal collection? It would be interesting to know.

  13. I've bought a few things from him. I think its not his full time job, but thats still no excuse for not getting any information about your helmet. I'm sure you will be ok, he has been around for quiet a while, just doesn't sell a whole lot. If you paid by paypal, you are fine for getting your money back.
