It's now listed on this site if anyone is interested, with serial #'s. I stand by my first assumption that it was legit and a ok deal, not a screaming deal.

  2. I'd say legit. It's probably mid-1990's J-1, which is a smaller container for most beginners. Non-brand name and small main, even with low jump #'s it doesn;t make it more attractive. Ok, the Smart is the best thing about this rig, but no DOM on the reserve or rides. I'd say it's a good deal, not a great deal though. I'd pass on it personally.

Edited to add, the base rings say 1993 on them, so it's an early 1990's rig. Looks to be more than 200 jumps on the container with the fading going on.

AFAIK they have no affiliation or more "accreditation" than any other training.

And that is the kicker, to use your GI Bill or your one time certification moneys, the training needs to be accredited, which none that I have found are. It takes a lot of money and time to get those credentials.

I do believe you can use some of your GI Bill to pay for the FAA tests that are required, but he training isn't covered.

  4. No, the UPT semi stowless bag only has 2 grommets, his bag has 4.

  5. I would say 370/365's are the industry standard for most locations with variable weather. Some DZ's in locations that have a constant wind have 340's and some have 340's for light passengers. 402, couldn;t tell you on that one.

Hmm, so you are saying that you did your recurrency jump with a guy who had no license and it did not bother you. I am assuming that you probably know that the recurrency jump should be performed under the supervision of a USPA instructional rating holder :)

Only if he was at a USPA Group member dropzone though.

  7. So I guess they DO exist...What say you? Is it a 175 in disguise? Or just an Orion 215 reserve marked up as a swift plus? Interesting...

exactly my thought, he says it was to chop lower so his main wouldn't drift far away. Could have cost him his life.

That exact thing has killed people already.

***I've never been in a cutaway situation... But I can't imagine that when the time comes I would be worried about whether or not I recover the main. That just doesn't seem like it would, or should be, a priority at that moment.[:/]

Unfortunetly with most anything we as humans do, we tend to get complacent after having done something awhile, even skydiving. We must always be vigilant and realize each jump is unique.

  10. Gary,

Nice checklist. Before EVERY day of jumping in the military, we do a complete review of training to include EP's. Keeps it fresh in your mind, especially not having jumped in a few months. It's like Safety Day everyday! It can be done at civilian DZ's, it just takes time to do it!

  11. Legs where pretty negative with some knee dropping, pretty common on your first jumps until you figure your legs out. Lots of factors contribute to wonky openings, especially the things we can see like type of main canopy, type/jumps on the lineset, slider all the way up, type of packing bands they were using, who the packer was? It will make a difference. One thing for certain is nothing is for certain in skydiving, the occasional hard opening is probably going to happen on any canopy, so be a where of that. When you buy your own gear, maintain it and it should take care of you.

On a side note, did you stretch at all prior to this jump? I notice a lot of people don't. It's more physical than you think, gets warmed up next time. Also think about strengthening your neck, and core with some exercises, it will help you in the long run.

  12. Um good for them? Not sure what reaction you wanted to get out of this thread. Looked like crappy video of the ground and your audio under canopy. I hope they didn't charge you for that...

Glad you started doing it on your own though! Have fun!

My originally wanted Spectre 190 wouldn’t fit inside of container and my instructor told me that I’ll be fine under 170 so I have 3 months to jump and learn as much as I can... I only have 16 jumps so far but by the time all the stuff gets assembled I hope to have 50+ and B license...Most importantly, I want to be safe and enjoy skydiving for many years to come

If you read your post like that, it doesn't make to much sense does it?

Not sure what you were asking for when you posted this, sounds like your mind is made up and whats done is done. Cypres or Vigil, doesn't really matter anymore. You can probably sell the Vigil easier since it has multi modes.

I would have gone for a used system with a 190 in it if I could find one. They are popular, so it may be hard to find, but resell is no problem. Not flaming you, just my opinion.

Too bad the instructor didn't let you grab the toggles and steer the canopy...I think they get more out of the jump that way. :)

    +1

  16. This thread is a good one to read.

Bottom line, I would not take any meds, just have your instructor hold off on the crazy turns. I got sick on my first tandem, but once I started jumping with my own parachute, it all went away. Kind of like driving don;t get car sick because they are driving. Next time, be the driver!

  17. I'm 22.5" as well and I wear a Large G3. Fits perfect. If you can, try before you buy.

  18. I would say based on that info it was Koch Gen 1 fittings (If they were around in '75-'76). Raise the spring loaded cover, push down on the release bar (or as we say "raise the skirt, drop the panties" )

If activated together, the release is pretty smooth. If you only get one, the release for the other side is very tough under load. They were never meant to be cutaway, especially since they were used on ejection seats.
